Confirmed: Arsenal sign Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa

Arsenal have completed the signing of Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa in a deal reported to be worth £51 million plus £4 million in add-ons.

The England international arrives in north London after being identified by Mikel Arteta as the ideal man to bolster the defence following William Saliba’s long-term back injury.

Having signed a four-year contract (with an option for an extra year), the boyhood Arsenal supporter will be hoping to establish himself as a key part of Arteta’s plans, even once Saliba returns to full fitness.

A Londoner by birth, Konsa came through the academy at Charlton Athletic before earning a £2.5 million move to Brentford in 2018. Just a year later, Aston Villa came calling and he has scarcely looked back.

Across seven seasons at Villa Park, Konsa made 286 appearances, establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s most reliable defenders. Although primarily a right-sided centre-back, he has also featured regularly at right-back, versatility that should prove particularly useful while Arsenal continue to manage the fitness of Jurrien Timber and Ben White.

Konsa made his senior England debut under Gareth Southgate in 2024 before becoming a regular under Thomas Tuchel. He started seven of the Three Lions’ eight matches at this summer’s World Cup, further enhancing a reputation that has steadily grown over the past few seasons.

On the new arrival Sporting Director, Andrea Berta said: “We’re delighted to have completed the signing of Ezri Konsa.

“Ezri is a defender of high quality, whose athleticism, composure and tactical intelligence have established him as one of the Premier League’s most consistent performers. Being comfortable in both central defence and at right-back, Ezri will bring valuable versatility to our squad while maintaining the high defensive standards which are fundamental to our challenge of winning major trophies.

“We are welcoming a player with proven Premier League and international experience, and strong leadership qualities, who will adapt seamlessly to our style of play. Just as importantly, we are welcoming a player with the character and mentality to make an immediate impact within our club. We welcome Ezri and his family to Arsenal.”

Konsa will wear the number 15 shirt and could make his Arsenal debut against, of all teams, Aston Villa next Monday.

We’ll seem it might come a little too soon given he has barely had a pre-season under his belt, but stranger things have happened. Either way, it probably won’t be long before we see him in red and white.
