“We start from scratch” Arteta relishes being chased by Premier League rivals

Mikel Arteta is more than happy to be hunted by several clubs in the race for the Premier League title as the Gunners look to defend the title they won just a few months ago.

Arsenal have improved every season since Arteta became their manager and finally reaped the rewards of those continuous improvements by winning the league title this summer. The Gunners will now look to build on that success and have strengthened their squad with a few additions to maintain their stability ahead of what promises to be an important season.

Arsenal have several top players in their current squad, and they will be looking to ensure that they all meet expectations, but defending the title will not be easy.

Arsenal ready for the challenge

Their rivals have all strengthened their squads to make their teams much stronger than they were over the last few weeks and challenge Arsenal for the title. The Gunners are now the team to beat, but they are happy to carry that responsibility.

Arteta is not particularly worried about being the hunted because his team is ready for the challenge ahead. The manager understands that Arsenal must prove themselves again if they are to remain at the top of English football.

He said via France24: “We start from scratch, from zero, and we’re going to have to prove we are at the level to go back to that position again.

“We need to show that desire, and the ambition to be better than what we were last season, a month ago, a week ago.

Arteta wants Arsenal in control

“If you give me the choice, I want to be first, I want to be hunted, and I want to be in control of our future, rather than depending on somebody else.”

Arteta’s comments underline his belief that Arsenal should embrace the pressure that comes with being champions. Rather than worrying about their rivals, the manager wants his players to focus on controlling their own results and maintaining the standards that took them to the title.

The Gunners know that every opponent will be motivated to beat them, but Arteta appears ready for that challenge. Arsenal will now attempt to prove that last season’s success was not a one-off and that they have the quality and ambition required to remain at the top.
