Arsenal have just made a big error with Reiss Nelson, what are they doing?

Reiss Nelson has said his goodbyes to Arsenal and will leave the club after spending most of his life on the books.

Nelson never quite made a first-team place his own and despite a number of semi-successful loan spells, he’s not managed to find a permanent home elsewhere either.

Now, with Nelson off the books, both the player and the club can move on and hopefully, Nelson himself can land somewhere and get regular football.

Still, while it’s good to see Nelson take the step to rebuild elsewhere, you can’t help but think Arsenal have made an error too.

Arsenal should have waited to release Reiss Nelson

There is no doubting that the decision to allow Reiss Nelson to move on is the right one.

The player himself needed a fresh start, while the club also move a decent chunk of change off the wage bill as well.

However, you can’t help but question the timing here on Arsenal’s part.

With the window just days away from closing, surely it would make sense for Arsenal to push hard to try and get some sort of deal involving a financial benefit over the line.

Instead, the Gunners have opted to let Nelson go for free with days to spare, effectively giving up.

Of course, there might be other things to focus on for Arsenal as the window approaches its close, while for Nelson himself, the club might have done him a favour given his time at the club.

Nevertheless, it will once again leave Andrea Berta open to criticism. Berta has been criticised previously for not getting enough done in terms of money back for the club, and this is another example.

In the end, it may matter little. But on the surface, it’s just another example of the Gunners failing to move a player on for money when it was wide open to be done.
