Arsenal 3-0 Coventry City: Player ratings as the champions cruise on opening night

Arsenal cruised to a 3-0 win over newly promoted Coventry City on the opening night of the 2026/27 Premier League season to get their title defence off to the perfect start.

Mikel Arteta made two changes to the side that defeated Manchester City 3-0 in the Community Shied last time out bringing Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice for Noni Madueke and Bruno Guimarães. The Brazilian was absent after suffering a groin injury meaning he missed out on making his Premier League debut for his new side.

Coventry showed signs of causing problems in the opening stages, but the Gunners found their feet and had their first chance of the game fall to Saka when he collected a ball from Christos Tzolis to unleash a volley from close range, but it was blocked well.

The hosts found the breakthrough after 15 minutes as Tzolis won back possession for Riccardo Calafiori to lay the ball off for Kai Havertz to meet and calmly convert into the far corner, scoring the first goal of the 2026/27 Premier League season.

It didn't take long for Arsenal to double their lead minutes later. Rice led a swift move with Tzolis picking the ball up on the left side to play in a low cross that Rushworth spilled for Saka to calmly slot into the back of the net and put his side well in control.

They looked to add to their two goals, but despite plenty of attacking pressure, they couldn't find another before half-time.

Just as was the case in the Community Shield, the Gunners added a third minutes after the restart and it came through Ødegaard once again as he latched onto a cutback from Ben White to fire at goal with his effort fumbled into the net by Rushworth.

Myles Lewis-Skelly almost got in on the action with a strike from range, but his effort was tipped over and out for a corner by the Sky Blues' goalkeeper.

Tzolis looked desperate to get on the scoresheet and nearly did with an effort on the half volley from distance, but his low shot was well saved by Rushworth.

Coventry did enjoy a short spell of control after making changes, but they couldn't break through Arsenal's stubborn backline and despite the hosts' attempts to find a fourth, the game finished 3-0 as the champions began their title defence with a dominant display at home.

Here are the Gunners' player ratings from their 3-0 win over Coventry City.

David Raya (GK) - 7/10 - Maybe his quietest game in an Arsenal shirt with absolutely nothing to do other than battle for some corners and catch a header late on. Good with the ball at his feet as always.

Ben White (RB) - 7.5/10 - Had a shot blocked from close range after a good link-up with Ødegaard. Set up his skipper with a good cutback for their third goal. Offered constant support with runs on the overlap.

Cristhian Mosquera (CB) - 7/10 - Dealt with Simms well and kept him quiet for the night. Made a statement with Ezri Konsa waiting for a chance to make his debut.

Gabriel Magalhães (CB) - 7/10 - Booked for pulling down Simms on the left side of the box. Really comfortable other than that shaky moment. Fired an effort over from range in the late stages.

Riccardo Calafiori (LB) - 7/10 - Set up Havertz for the opener with a well placed lay-off. Involved in attack as usual and allowed chances to get up the pitch with his side's dominance. Replaced late on.

Martin Ødegaard (CM) - 9/10 - Sent the ball out wide for Tzolis to play into the box for their side's second of the game. Got on the scoresheet himself with the third goal, seeing a strike from close range spilled into the net by Rushworth. Played so many clever passes throughout. Given a rest for the final minutes.

Myles Lewis-Skelly (CM) - 8/10 - Composed in midfield with some beautiful touches to receive the ball on the turn. Saw a shot from range tipped over by Rushworth. Linked up with his teammates so well with some great passes.

Declan Rice (CM) - 7.5/10 - Started the move for the second goal with a great run from his own half. Split the lines with a great pass in the build-up to the third. Recovered well to help out his defence when needed. Brought off with just over 20 minutes to play.

Bukayo Saka (RW) - 8/10 - Saw a volley from close range blocked early on. Got his goal when he doubled his side's advantage, meeting Rushworth's spill to convert. Involved in the third as he linked up with Ødegaard and White. Withdrawn after 67 minutes.

Kai Havertz (ST) - 7.5/10 - Broke the deadlock with a well taken finish, running onto Calafiori's lay-off to beat Rushworth. Linked up with Tzolis well and also made some good runs to support the wide players.

Christos Tzolis (LW) - 8.5/10 - Looked eager to be involved in attack and saw a low goal bound shot saved in the opening minutes. Won back possession for his side's opening goal. Just kept causing problems down the left flank. Saw another strike kept out from range in the second-half. Subbed for the closing stages.
