Arsenal 3 – Coventry City 0 match report: off to a good start

Arsenal outclassed Coventry City en route to a 3-0 win at the Emirates to open the season. The Gunners probably could have scored more but they throttled back considerably after Martin Ødegaard made it 3-0 early in the second half. It feels nice to score two in the first half, get a third just after the break, and cruise home rather than sweating out a result, doesn’t it?

Yes, Coventry City are newly promoted and getting their first taste of the speed and skill of the Premier League, but it shouldn’t surprise anyone that the Arsenal attack was humming along with Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka, and Martin Ødegaard on the pitch together. Simply put, they are the three best attackers at the club and they were only available to start together in the Premier League twice last season. Arsenal’s attacking “problems” from last season might be solved by something as simply having their stars able to play together. What a concept, right?

Christos Tzolis put in a standout performance, too. He’s direct, makes good choices with the ball, and is always looking to make something happen. He was instrumental in both first half goals. On the first, it was his pressure on the fullback that created the turnover for Riccardo Calafiori to pounce on before finding Kai Havertz at the top of the box. A lovely, composed, first-touch finish from the German striker, too. Kudos to Ben White for the initial long switch of play, even if it wasn’t perfectly accurate. It got the job done.

Tzolis likely won’t get an assist on the second goal, but it was his fizzed cross that the keeper couldn’t get a strong enough hand to that fell to Bukayo Saka to deposit into the empty net. Declan Rice helped create the goal with a strong run through the middle of the field, and Martin Ødegaard helped the ball along deftly on the move.

The familiar right-side triangle of Ben White, Martin Ødegaard, and Bukayo Saka combined for the third goal to put the game to bed. How many times have we seen that overlap from Ben White to get around the corner for a cutback? Maybe not all that frequently lately, but when they were all fit and firing a couple seasons ago, it was a bread and butter attacking move. White’s cutback found Martin Ødegaard, who completely scuffed his shot. The resulting change-up flutter-ball wrong-footed the keeper and found the back of the net. MØ celebrated by shrugging rather sheepishly, knowing he’d gotten a bit fortunate.

Myles Lewis-Skelly was strong in the middle of the field. His turns under pressure are silky smooth. He nearly picked out Riccardo Calafiori, similar to how he did in the Community Shield, for a fourth Arsenal goal late in the match. Cristhian Mosquera was solid, too. He and Gabriel got their marking wrong towards the end of the game and left a Coventry attacker open for a header from a cross, but they weren’t punished for it. Mosquera got tangled up with Taiwo Awoniyi late after getting much tighter than he needed to and was a bit lucky to avoid a yellow card. But that’s nitpicking.

What an embarrassment of riches Arsenal have at their disposal with most of the roster healthy. There might not be another team in England that can bring on 5-subs with the combined quality of Noni Madueke, Martin Zubimendi, Ebere Eze, Mikel Merino, and Piero Hincapie. Viktor Gyokeres, Ethan Nwaneri, and Max Dowman were unused subs, and William Saliba, Jurrien Timber, and Bruno Guimaraes are out with injury. Ezri Konsa will be available for selection next week, too. Gabriel Martinelli wasn’t in the squad, likely because he’s going to be sold (and hopefully replaced with an attacking addition). Mikel Arteta has a deep roster.

Arsenal have 10 days off before a tough trip to Aston Villa on MD2. It’s always nice when we can sit back, relax, and enjoy the rest of the Premier League action for a weekend. The Gunners are off and running!
