‘I don’t agree with it’: Why Gary Neville was left fuming during the Arsenal v Chelsea game

Arsenal managed to keep their unbeaten start to the season going by coming from behind to beat Chelsea at The Emirates today.

The Gunners were shocked in the opening two minutes when summer target Morgan Rogers fired Chelsea in front.

However, Arsenal steadied themselves and equalised through Kai Havertz, before skipper Martin Odegaard scored just after half-time to give Arsenal a 2-1 win.

Still, things might have been easier for the Gunners had Riccardo Calafiori not seen a goal ruled out in the 12th minute for a debatable offside call on Ezri Konsa.

And speaking on the incident, Sky’s co-commentator, Gary Neville, was far from happy.

We’ve seen some contentious offside calls in recent years that have had massive consequences.

This weekend alone, Sunderland fell foul of a harsh call, while it was Sunderland who also benefited in the playoff final when Sheffield United scored.

Nevertheless, despite the officials being correct in terms of the laws of the game, Gary Neville was far from impressed by today’s call on Konsa.

“I don’t agree with it. I don’t agree with it.

“I mean look, there’s no doubt he’s in an offside position, but Emi Martinez has a clear chance to save it, I don’t think he’s interfering with him,” Neville commented on Sky Sports.

Luckily for the Gunners, it didn’t matter in the end but these sorts of decisions are what drive fans mad.

Yes, it might have been correct by the laws of the game but there just never seems to be any common sense applied in football anymore.

Of course, some would argue that you can’t simply run a game on common sense alone and that point might be valid.

But as Neville says here, Konsa hardly stopped Martinez from being able to stop the ball and on another day, this could have been costly for the Gunners.

Once again, we are left talking about a referee’s call in what was otherwise a great game.
