Barcelona reach agreement to sign Arsenal striker after Julian Alvarez blow
Arsenal have agreed a deal to sell Gabriel Jesus to Barcelona, with the Brazilian striker set to undergo a medical on Monday ahead of completing his permanent move to the Spanish champions.
Fabrizio Romano reports that Barcelona will pay Arsenal a €10 million (£8.6m) package plus add-ons for the 29-year-old, bringing his four-year spell in north London close to an end.
Jesus has already been authorised by Arsenal to travel for his medical after Barcelona moved quickly to complete an agreement during the final days of the transfer window.
The development comes shortly after reports Mundo Deportivo revealed that Barcelona had decided to go “all in” for Jesus following the collapse of their pursuit of Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez.
Atletico have categorically refused to negotiate with their La Liga rivals over Alvarez, forcing Barcelona to turn their attention towards an alternative centre-forward.
Jesus quickly emerged as their preferred option and negotiations have now advanced to the point where only the final formalities stand between him and a move to Camp Nou.
Jesus has also found his pathway to regular football increasingly difficult, with Viktor Gyokeres and Kai Havertz among Arteta’s options through the middle.
The former Manchester City forward had entered the final year of his Arsenal contract, meaning this summer represented the Gunners’ final realistic opportunity to command a transfer fee rather than risk losing him for nothing in 2027.
Jesus joined Arsenal from Manchester City for around £45m in July 2022 and immediately became an influential figure during the early stages of Arteta’s transformation of the team.
His Arsenal career was subsequently disrupted by several significant injuries, most notably the anterior cruciate ligament problem suffered in January 2025 that required surgery and resulted in a lengthy absence.
Jesus nevertheless recovered to contribute last season as Arsenal finally ended their 22-year wait for the Premier League title.
The Brazil international has recorded 33 goals across 123 appearances for the Gunners, although his influence has increasingly diminished as Arsenal have strengthened their attacking options.
His departure also continues sporting director Andrea Berta’s work to streamline Arteta’s squad before Tuesday’s deadline, with Reiss Nelson agreeing a mutual contract termination and Gabriel Martinelli also nearing his move to Al-Hilal.
Arsenal are simultaneously keeping their own interest in Alvarez alive, although convincing the Argentine to return to England remains a major obstacle.
For Jesus, however, the uncertainty surrounding his future now appears to be over.
Provided he successfully completes Monday’s medical, the striker will leave Arsenal permanently and begin the next stage of his career with Barcelona.
