Arsenal and Chelsea prepare to face each other this weekend in what promises to be one of the most compelling Premier League fixtures of the early season.

The contrast with Chelsea’s summer activity in midfield is stark, particularly given that Enzo Fernandez departed Stamford Bridge for Manchester City in a deal worth a staggering £125m.
By the time Fernandez completed his exit to the Etihad Stadium, Chelsea found themselves unable to recruit a suitable replacement, with the major midfield deals across Europe already completed.
Fernandez joined fellow big-money arrivals Elliot Anderson, who cost £116m, and Ayyoub Bouaddi, who arrived for £86m, as Manchester City reshaped their squad in dramatic fashion.
Options such as Sandro Tonali or Carlos Baleba were floated as potential targets to bolster Chelsea’s midfield, but Guimaraes would have represented the most logical and cost-effective solution available.
At £75m, Guimaraes would not only have replaced Fernandez but could have arguably offered Chelsea an upgrade on the Argentina international in that central midfield role.
Chelsea’s interest in midfield talent extended beyond Guimaraes, with the club also linked at various points during the window with Arsenal’s Martin Zubimendi.
The fact that Zubimendi is now considered to be behind Guimaraes in Arsenal’s midfield pecking order speaks volumes about the remarkable depth Xabi Alonso has assembled at the Emirates.
As both clubs prepare for Sunday’s showdown, the contrast in how each side navigated the transfer window will add an intriguing subplot to an already mouth-watering fixture.
