Carragher said Arsenal failed to sign the type of player that they need

Arsenal have one of the best squads in the world, and the Gunners struggled to improve the quality of their squad during the last transfer window.

Some people might see that as a bad thing, but it is probably better than most would admit because the Gunners already have a quality squad. They have several players who make their team too good for an average player to get regular chances.

When Arsenal were in the market during the summer, they therefore focused on quality players over quantity. The Gunners have money to spend, but they cannot spend it on just about any player, so they concentrated on signing players capable of making the team better.

Arsenal wanted elite quality

The Gunners did not get all the top players they wanted, with Julian Alvarez in particular refusing to join them, even though Atletico Madrid were interested in selling him to Arsenal.

Arsenal also did not want to sign another attacker simply for the sake of adding depth. They believe very few players would be as good as they want their frontman to be, meaning they were looking for exceptional quality rather than another squad option.

That approach explains why the Gunners did not complete every attacking deal they considered during the window. They wanted a player capable of making a significant difference rather than someone who would simply compete with the options already available.

Carragher explains Arsenal’s strategy

Jamie Carragher believes Arsenal did not sign the profile of player they needed, arguing that the Gunners now require a world-class addition if they are to improve their squad further.

He said via ESPN: “It’s very hard to improve Arsenal now because they are such a good team, such a strong squad. So you’re talking about a world-class player as the only one that can improve them. They’ve tried to get them and haven’t been able to get these deals over the line.

“There’s no point bringing somebody of the level that they’ve already got. They’ve got five or six players in attack which I would call ‘seven or eight out of 10 players.’ They wanted a ‘nine or 10 out of 10 player’ but couldn’t get it across the line.”

Carragher’s assessment highlights the challenge facing Arsenal. Their squad is already strong, so only genuine elite quality would make a major difference.
