Arsene Wenger called him a ‘huge talent’ as a youngster, now he’s in the championship at 28 years old
Arsene Wenger had high hopes for Krystian Bielik.
When Arsenal paid around £2.4million to bring the 17-year-old from Legia Warsaw in January 2015, Wenger said Bielik had ‘all the attributes to be a great player’.
“He’s a very strong player, he has a very good technical level and looks intelligent,” Wenger said about him.
A decade on, Bielik has just got another move, signing for Cardiff City from West Brom on a three-year deal for around £2.5million.
He’s had a respectable career, but he’s still in the Championship and still searching for the top-flight football that once seemed inevitable.
What happened to Krystian Bielik at Arsenal?
Uncharacteristically, Arsenal actually got a good fee when selling Bielik to Derby in 2019, despite making just two senior appearances.
With an initial £7.5million plus a further £2.5million in add-ons, he remains the Rams’ club-record signing.
However, two severe ACL injuries derailed his development, and by the time he had properly recovered, the momentum that had made him such a promising player was gone.
He has earned 11 caps for Poland and represented them at the 2022 World Cup, but has been out of the fold since 2023.
Birmingham City loaned him for a season in 2022 before signing him permanently. They got relegated to League One in 2024 but Bielik captained them to promotion back to the Championship the following season.
West Brom signed him last summer, where he played as a centre-back, and now he has joined Cardiff, where he will reunite with a familiar face.
Calum Chambers, another former Arsenal player who will know Bielik from their time together at London Colney between 2015 and 2019, is already at Cardiff.
The two only shared a competitive pitch for Arsenal once — the horrific 3-0 EFL Cup defeat to Sheffield Wednesday — but they will know each other well from years of training together under Wenger and later Unai Emery.
Bielik is 28, which is the point when midfielders typically enter their prime. The talent Wenger spotted is clearly still there, but it seems the Championship might well be his ceiling.
