Arsenal must be at their best to silence early Chelsea title talk
Arsenal’s Premier League title defence faces its first serious examination on Sunday when an increasingly confident Chelsea arrive at the Emirates Stadium.
The opening victories over Coventry City and Aston Villa were impressive for different reasons, but neither presented the combination of quality and attacking threat that Arsenal can expect from Xabi Alonso’s side.
Chelsea have quickly emerged as potential title challengers following Alonso’s summer appointment, taking six points from six while scoring a league-high seven goals.
Their new-look attack has immediately clicked, with Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro joined by £117million signing Morgan Rogers in a fluid frontline capable of hurting opponents in several ways.
Rogers already has a goal and an assist, while only Bruno Fernandes has registered more combined shots and chances created than the former Arsenal target this season.
Chelsea’s chaotic 4-3 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion demonstrated their attacking potential, although conceding three times also showed that Alonso has not yet solved everything.
That should encourage Arsenal.
The champions have shown two very different versions of themselves already, beginning with an authoritative 3-0 victory over Coventry before grinding out a 1-0 win at Aston Villa.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has consequently seen his team demonstrate that they can overwhelm opponents when given opportunities but also remain composed when matches become uncomfortable.
Their defensive numbers are particularly impressive.
Arsenal have not conceded in the Premier League and have restricted their opening opponents to only one shot on target, continuing the defensive excellence that underpinned last season’s title success.
Chelsea will provide a much stronger examination of those foundations, especially with William Saliba unavailable and Cristhian Mosquera carrying a fitness concern.
There is nevertheless every reason for Arsenal to approach the derby confidently.
They have not lost a Premier League meeting with Chelsea since August 2021 and have dominated this fixture in recent years, while their unbeaten run in London derbies now stretches to 16 matches.
Sunday should therefore be viewed as an opportunity rather than merely a threat.
Chelsea have attracted early attention as possible challengers, and defeating them convincingly would remind the rest of the league that removing Arsenal from the summit will require something exceptional.
It would also provide an immediate response to questions about the champions’ attacking depth following a transfer window that ended with Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus departing without another forward arriving.
Arsenal have already shown they possess more than one route to victory.
Now they must combine their defensive control with the attacking authority demonstrated against Coventry and deliver their most complete performance of the young season.
Three points would preserve their perfect start, but the manner of victory could carry considerably greater significance.
The first major title test has arrived, and Arsenal have the chance to send an early warning to everyone hoping to take their crown.
