Bruno a doubt ahead of Arsenal’s Premier League opener

Bruno Guimaraes may have to wait until next month to make his first appearance at the Emirates in Arsenal colours after picking up a knock in Sunday’s Community Shield victory over Manchester City.

The Brazil international started in Cardiff but was substituted at half-time, with television cameras briefly catching sight of him sporting a sizeable ice pack on his right thigh.

Asked whether his marquee summer signing had recovered in time for tomorrow’s Premier League opener against Coventry City, Arteta said: “Let’s see. It’s evolving well, but let’s see.”

Given the excitement surrounding Bruno’s arrival, it’s frustrating timing if he has to sit things out, but with the depth Arsenal now boast in midfield, Arteta is unlikely to lose too much sleep if he’s forced to wait another week before unleashing him.

The manager did have more encouraging news elsewhere, confirming that both Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka are available, having come through their Community Shield cameos unscathed.

Beyond that, Arsenal’s injury list remains unchanged. William Saliba and Jurrien Timber are still sidelined, with no firm timetable for either player’s return. Saliba is currently managing his back problem conservatively after the decision was taken against surgery, while The Independent’s Miguel Delaney reports that Timber is expected to be back in action at some point next month. According to Arteta, he’s still not training with the group.
