Arsenal duo in contention for major individual Ballon d'Or honours

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta and David Raya have earned individual Ballon d’Or nominations following their outstanding roles in Arsenal’s Premier League title-winning campaign.

Arteta has been shortlisted for the Men’s Johan Cruyff Trophy, awarded to the best men’s coach, while Raya is in contention for the Yashin Trophy as the world’s leading goalkeeper.

The recognition comes after Arteta guided Arsenal to their first Premier League title in 22 years and within touching distance of a maiden Champions League crown.

Arsenal finished seven points clear of Manchester City after collecting 85 points, completing the transformation from three successive runners-up finishes into English champions.

The Gunners also reached the Champions League final in Budapest after previously progressing only as far as the quarter-finals and semi-finals during the preceding two campaigns.

Arteta faces competition for the coaching award from Paris Saint-Germain boss Luis Enrique, Bayern Munich’s Vincent Kompany, Aston Villa manager Unai Emery and Spain coach Luis de la Fuente.

Raya’s nomination is similarly backed by an exceptional campaign at the heart of Arsenal’s title-winning defence.

The 30-year-old recorded 19 clean sheets from 37 Premier League appearances, conceding only 26 goals and finishing four shutouts clear of Manchester City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

That record earned Raya the Premier League Golden Glove for a third consecutive season, having won outright in 2023/24 before sharing the 2024/25 prize with Nottingham Forest’s Matz Sels.

Only Pepe Reina, Joe Hart and Ederson had previously managed to win the award in three consecutive seasons, leaving Raya one Golden Glove behind the record of four held by Petr Cech and Hart.

His influence also extends considerably beyond conventional goalkeeping, with his distribution and composure in possession forming an important part of Arteta’s build-up structure.

Raya has started the new campaign strongly too, keeping clean sheets against Coventry City and Aston Villa before making a crucial late save from Estevao Willian during Sunday’s 2-1 comeback victory over Chelsea.

Arsenal have consequently taken maximum points from their opening three league fixtures, with Raya recently admitting that finally winning the title has given the squad greater confidence and freedom.

The two nominations further underline the scale of Arsenal’s resurgence after years of gradual progress under Arteta.

Arsenal have also been shortlisted for the Ballon d’Or Men’s Club of the Year award alongside PSG, Bayern Munich, Flamengo and Bodo/Glimt.

Whether Arteta and Raya ultimately collect their respective prizes remains to be seen, but their nominations provide further recognition of the individuals behind Arsenal’s return to the summit of English football.
