Report: Arsenal 3-0 Coventry (inc. goals)

Arsenal: Raya, White, Mosquera, Gabriel, Calafiori, Rice, Lewis-Skelly, Odegaard, Tzolis, Havertz, Saka
Subs: Kepa, Hincapie, Eze, Gyokeres, Madueke, Merino, Nwaneri, Zubimendi, Dowman
Arsenal kicked off their 2026/27 Premier League campaign with a comfortable 3-0 win over Coventry at Emirates Stadium on Friday, thanks to goals from Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard.
Mikel Arteta selected a strong line-up which was a sign of his early intentions, with new signing Ezri Konsa also paraded to the home fans before kick off.
Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus both missed out on the matchday squad again with their futures at the club still to be decided.
FIRST HALF
Arsenal started brightly and there was an early sight of goal for Christos Tzolis who shot wide from distance, before he popped up on the right hand side to cross for Bukayo Saka who controlled well in close quarters before his snapshot was deflected wide.
From the resulting corner, the Gunners worked a clever set piece routine to Tzolis on the edge of the box but his (slightly scuffed) left-footed effort was cleared off the line with goalkeeper Carl Rushworth beaten.
But the early pressure eventually told and Tzolis was involved again, doing well to close down Milan van Ewijk in the right back area before the ball fell to Riccardo Calafiori – his pass into Kai Havertz was perfect and the German swept home to put Arsenal ahead. 1-0.
Arteta’s men were already purring and playing some lovely football, with Coventry chasing shadows and just eight minutes later they doubled their lead.
Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard combined nicely in midfield before the ball made its way to Tzolis, whose low cross was awkward and ultimately not dealt with by any defenders nor the goalkeeper who palmed the ball straight to Saka for an easy finish. 2-0.
Arsenal were in total control of this game and they were threatening to score a third, with Odegaard playing Ben White through with a lovely reverse pass but his shot was blocked, before Rice whipped a left-footed effort just wide after another well-worked short corner.
This was an accomplished first half for the Champions who were in complete control against newly promoted opposition, and playing with a sense of freedom that comes with winning.
SECOND HALF
It was game over within minutes of the restart when Rice found Odegaard between the lines, before the right-sided trio rolled back the years after Saka played Ben White through on the overlap, and his cutback was bundled in by Odegaard to make it three. 3-0.
This goal won’t be making any highlight reels because Odegaard didn’t hit it cleanly and I’m not sure how the goalkeeper let it squirm through, but it gave the boys a good chuckle as they celebrated so that’s something.
Tzolis continued to impress and whacked a couple of fierce shots towards goal in search of his goal, with one deflecting just wide and the second calling Rushworth into action through a sea of bodies. As home debuts go, this was an impressive one for the new signing.
With 25 minutes remaining, Arteta made his first changes of the game with Martin Zubimendi and Noni Madueke replacing Rice and Saka as they continue their comebacks to full fitness. Eberechi Eze and Mikel Merino soon followed with Tzolis and Odegaard going off.
With the game winding down, Arteta made his final change with Piero Hincapie replacing Calafiori who had a fun game roaming down the left side.
There was a chance for Coventry to get a late consolation when Jack Rudoni ghosted into the box unmarked but his header was comfortably saved by David Raya who had nothing else to do all night. Merino also had a low effort saved after good work from Madueke on the break.
The second half was effectively a training exercise for Arsenal who did their job in 48 minutes, and they controlled a kind opening fixture with all the professionalism we have come to expect from this group. First game – three points – job done.
Now we can sit back and watch everybody else knowing our work was done.
