Donczew signing could give Arsenal U18s much-needed boost

Arsenal U18s’ challenging start to the season continued yesterday with a 2-1 defeat to Brighton.

The young Gunners, under the guidance of interim coach Josh Smith, have yet to win any of their four games so far this season in all competitions.

Arsenal ended yesterday’s game with nine men as Emerson Nwaneri was sent off in the first half and goalkeeper Jack Talbot was dismissed late on.

It seems clear that the U18s are in need of improvement and the arrival of Axel Donczew from Cardiff City could help in that regard.

Arsenal have confirmed that the 16-year-old, who has been capped by Wales at youth level, has joined the club on an initial scholarship contract.

Donczew, who usually plays on the left wing, will progress to professional terms when he turns 17 in February next year.

It is hoped that the youngster will add extra dynamism to Arsenal’s attack at youth level, while he already possesses some senior experience having represented Cardiff in the EFL Trophy.

Donczew will also be targeting involvement with Arsenal U19s in the UEFA Youth League and perhaps even the U21s as the campaign progresses.

Arsenal U18s will return to action next Saturday with a home game against Southampton.
