Arsenal poised to sign Man Utd right-back & winger on free transfers
Arsenal are likely to sign Manchester United duo Habeeb Ogunneye and James Scanlon on free transfers, according to The Athletic.
The Gunners have focused on adding emerging talents to their academy over the past year. They are currently close to two new signings.
The Athletic report that 20-year-old right-back Ogunneye has already undergone a medical ahead of his proposed switch from United.
The Gunners are also close to finalising a move for 19-year-old winger Scanlon from the Red Devils.
There is an expectation that both deals will be free transfers with United receiving significant sell-on clauses.
Ogunneye and Scanlon are well known to newly appointed Under-21s head coach David Horseman.
Horseman spent four months as United’s academy coach before joining Arsenal this summer.
Arsenal aiming for better Premier League 2 season
The Gunners have made good progress at the senior level and won the Premier League title after a 22-year wait last campaign.
However, they have not replicated this in the development ranks. Arsenal Under-21s finished a lowly 14th in the Premier League 2 last term with 29 points in 20 matches.
Chelsea Under-21s won the regular league season with 43 points, ahead of United on goal difference. Brighton & Hove Albion clinched the play-off title, beating United too.
Arsenal will no doubt want a significant improvement this term.
Ogunneye and Scanlon, who spent part of last season on loan with League Two clubs, should add some much-needed quality in the Under-21 set-up.
Alongside the Red Devils duo, the club are also close to landing Blackburn Rovers striker Igor Tyjon after a transfer saga that has lasted an entire year.
The Championship outfit have eventually agreed to sell him for around £1million up front. The 18-year-old striker has already undergone a medical.
Arsenal’s Under-21 squad should receive another boost in mid-season with Shamrock Rovers midfielder Victor Ozhianvuna expected to join.
The 17-year-old has been nursing a muscle injury since May. The Irish youngster is likely to resume first-team action soon before his January move (after he turns 18).
Meanwhile, the Gunners will complete the much-awaited transfers of Edwin & Holger Quintero from Independiente del Valle in August 2027.
The Ecuadorian wonderkids could start with the Under-21s. Hence, the reserve squad should see a notable improvement in performances going forward.
