Andrea Berta wanted another Tottenham player at Arsenal besides Cristian Romero

Andrea Berta wanted another Tottenham player at Arsenal besides Cristian Romero

Arsenal’s interest in Cristian Romero was one of the wildest rumours of the summer transfer window.

The Gunners needed a new centre-back because of William Saliba’s injury, and they were linked with several big names.

Romero, who was the Tottenham Hotspur captain at the time, was said to be on Arsenal’s wish list, but he wasn’t the only one.

A report has now revealed that Andrea Berta had another Spurs player on his wish list, but no move materialised.

Micky van de Ven was on Andrea Berta’s Arsenal transfer wish list

Berta had a 21-man transfer wish list at Arsenal this summer, and there were some big names there.

The eye-catching ones were Vinicius Jr, Julian Alvarez, Kenan Yildiz and Morgan Rogers, but the Gunners had other players there too.

As widely reported during the summer, Romero was on Arsenal’s list, but the very next name was his then-teammate, Micky van de Ven.

That is a big surprise, as the Dutchman is a left-sided centre-half, and Arsenal have plenty of cover in that position.

Gabriel Magalhaes is the undisputed starter there, while Piero Hincapie and Riccardo Calafiori can also play there. Even young Marli Salmon is more than good enough to fill in when required.

Yet, for some strange reason, Van de Ven was considered an option, but the BBC claim that Tottenham weren’t even going to consider selling him to their fierce North London rivals.

The same was the case with Romero, who ended up joining Atletico Madrid in the end.

Interest in Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven raises big questions about Andrea Berta

Most of the names on Berta’s wish list for Arsenal are understandable, but we just cannot understand the reasoning behind the interest in Romero and Van de Ven.

Firstly, neither player is good enough.

Arsenal fans were completely against the idea of signing Romero, while, apart from his blistering pace, Van de Ven is inferior in every way to Gabriel, Hincapie and Calafiori.

More importantly, everybody in the world would have told you that Tottenham were never going to sell a player to Arsenal. So why did Berta have them on his list?

This really raises questions about whether the Italian is the man for the job going forward.
