Arsenal’s final transfer priority signals a huge show of trust in Christos Tzolis

Arsenal aren’t done yet in the transfer market, it seems.

The champions of England have completed the signing of Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa, joining Illan Meslier, Christos Tzolis, and Bruno Guimaraes through the door.

The latter two in particular have already settled in seamlessly, contributing to Arsenal’s comfortable 3-0 Community Shield win over Manchester City.

But according to Flashscore, Arsenal are still determined to make one final addition before the window closes.

The position of that addition tells you a lot about how Mikel Arteta views his squad.

The position Arsenal want to strengthen before the transfer window closes

Arsenal have targeted a number of players to strengthen the left side of the attack this summer.

At the same time, links to more central players like Julian Alvarez and Eli-Junior Kroupi have hovered in the background.

So which is the position Arsenal really want to address? Well, Flashscore claim Arsenal want a central attacking player, rather than a left winger.

They want a forward who can operate through the middle and give them another elite option in the central areas.

That points firmly towards someone like Alvarez, whose future at Atletico Madrid is described as ‘increasingly precarious’, or potentially Victor Osimhen, though Arsenal ultimately decided not to act on that opportunity when it emerged last week.

The decision to prioritise a central player over a left winger is interesting, and it feels like a very clear show of faith for one of their summer signings.

Arsenal’s transfer priority is a huge sign of faith in Christos Tzolis

The left-wing position is one that has been upgradeable since even last summer.

And yet, with the window entering its final stretch, Arsenal have seemingly decided that position is covered by Tzolis.

His two assists in the Community Shield clearly made an impression, following on from his pre-season displays.

Arteta has seen enough to trust him as the primary left-wing option for the season, with Gabriel Martinelli expected to be sold.

Tzolis can’t be expected to hold that role down on his own, so Arteta may well turn to Eberechi Eze for that spot as the season goes on.

We’re yet to see Eze’s true potential on the flank, but he did start on the left in the biggest league game of last season against Manchester City — and he actually hit the post.

If Arteta does genuinely view Eze as a credible left-wing option, then that position suddenly looks less thin.

Tzolis and Eze is more than good enough for another season, and might be smarter than just panic-buying someone like Pedro Neto, who doesn’t move the needle at all.

But Arsenal do still need more X-factor in attack, and if they can address that by bringing an elite central attacking player, then that will solve it.
