£51m for Konsa… and what happens to Hale End?

So it appears that, as in every summer transfer window, Arteta has got his wish once more…another defender!

Ornstein confirmed it, tap-in merchant Romano confirmed it, then the major outlets like Sky Sports confirmed it, with HandOfArsenal going the next level with his Tweet:

So we’ve got ourselves an experienced, duel-winning, central defender, who will slot in, be as ‘plug-and-play’ as you can get in this division, until Saliba returns. And even then, he can be eased in, knowing we’ve got an England international who is holding the fort until our Rolls-Royce defender is fully recovered from his back injury.

And when you put it like that, it’s a good deal. Arsenal were indeed only a Ben White/Mosquera injury away from being in a spot of bother at the back. Both had injury problems last season; both missed a combined 23 games for Arsenal (White with 13, Mosquera with 10), and so if that were to happen early in the season, we’d really be in a spot of bother. If Timber’s injury needs a lot of nursing back to full health – which I really feel like that’s the case – then from a footballing perspective I totally get it. Konsa can play right back; he’ll predominantly play centre back, we have hopefully got a lot of games to play this season, and the young Spanirad will get matches.

But if I’m Christian Mosquera right now, I’ve got questions, because this feels like a pathway is being blocked in the short term. If I’m Christian Mosquera, I’m a young, 22-year-old who had outside aspirations of making the Spanish national team for the World Cup. But it’s ok, because I’ve got two international caps; I’ve got time; I just need to prove myself by playing football. Last season I got 35 appearances under my belt at a total of just under 2,000 minutes. That’s an average of 57 minutes per game over 35 games. So I’m looking for more minutes than I got this season to ensure I continue my development.

Last season, Arsenal played 63 matches in total in all competitions. So basically, Mosquera played in 55% of matches, averaging under an hour. He played the full 90 minutes in (according to Transfermarkt) four Champions League games, five Premier League games (six if you count 85 minutes at Liverpool), three FA Cup games, and two League Cup games. So he was a starter in 14 matches of the 63. Now, when you think about it like that, you’d think there must be enough football for him to up his numbers. But I’m also thinking about what this says to him as a player. Arteta will manage him, we know that, by explaining that the club can’t take the risks with Big Bill and Timber out. And he will know that. But if Konsa is fit – and we know he probably will be because he didn’t miss a game for Villa last season – then he will play. And if Big Bill is back in December, with Timber back as well, Mosquera finds himself in third choice for both full-back and centre-half positions.

The other part of this transfer that makes me go “hmm…” is the fee. £51million for a 28-year-old is a fair chunk of change. Hey, he’s a good player, Villa still have two years left on his deal, they could still drive a bit of a bargain, and with Arsenal apparently going in at £30million to start off, Villa were never going to let them get one of their best players for cheap. They have to sell this to their fans too, just like Newcastle did with Bruno. But for me, having been told all summer that Arsenal might need to sell, and with Richard Garlick coming out this week and admitting that if offers came in for one of the Hale End lads, we’d have to take a look at it, I’m putting two and two together here, guys, and I’m not liking it.

I like the Konsa deal from a footballing perspective, that it covers us with our current injury problems, and I’m sure he’ll be great when he joins. But let me put a hypothetical scenario to you. Konsa signs for £51million. Ethan Nwaneri goes to Chelsea, Newcastle, or maybe even Villa for £50million. Hard not to make a correlation between the two, right? And maybe I’m just too high on our Hale End boys, or the fact that we have players like Declan Rice who can play centre-half if really needed, or even that Calafiori is somebody I’m sure we’ve seen play some nominal minutes at right back at times, but I just wanted to see us keep Ethan, because I think he could explode within the next couple of years. I want him doing that at The Arsenal, not in the colours of another club’s jersey.

That’s where my apprehension over this deal comes from. It’s nothing to do with Konsa, or the fact we need a player in that position; it’s purely the worry that we might be losing a massive talent before his true potential is reached.

Who knows, maybe the club has a master plan to sell off all of the deadweight for more than just peanuts. There’s Nelson, Fabio Vieira, and Gabriel Jesus, who might all fetch us close to what we might be paying for the Konsa money. I saw a rumour that Gabriel Martinelli is on a shortlist for a potential Saudi deal too, but the problem there is that you have to use that money to fund a replacement. So we’re going to lose somebody – it feels almost inevitable now. And that’s the reason I’m not super excited for this to happen.

But, when it does, I will support him; I will be 100% behind him; I’ll be very glad we have him at times; and I’ll be hopeful he can play his part in hopefully another glorious season.

We’ll be discussing that deal and more in our pre-season pod tonight at 8pm on the Same Old Arsenal podcast. So if you fancy joining us you can here. Otherwise, I’ll be back on here tomorrow for a match preview.
