Bundesliga club intensify efforts to seal move for Arsenal midfielder

Hamburger SV have stepped up their efforts to re-sign Fabio Vieira after sporting director Claus Costa travelled to London to meet the Arsenal midfielder.

Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg reports that Costa flew from Hamburg on Tuesday and personally reiterated how highly HSV value Vieira following his successful loan spell with the Bundesliga club last season.

Costa also met Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta during the visit, although Plettenberg stresses that the meeting did not involve formal negotiations between the clubs.

The two sides remain several million euros apart in their valuations, with only a permanent transfer currently under consideration as the summer window nears its close.

Vieira has also received enquiries from elsewhere, leaving HSV with competition as they attempt to bring the Portuguese back to the Volksparkstadion.

The 26-year-old spent last season on loan in Hamburg and became an important figure as the club successfully preserved their Bundesliga status.

Vieira contributed seven goals and six assists across 31 appearances, providing creativity and goals from midfield during his first campaign in the German top-flight.

His performances have made a permanent reunion attractive to HSV, although the financial gap with Arsenal remains the principal obstacle towards a transfer.

Hamburg have been reluctant to abandon their pursuit despite strengthening elsewhere over the summer, and their interest remains active as the transfer deadline approaches.

Arsenal are similarly looking for a permanent resolution rather than another temporary move after Vieira spent the past two campaigns away from north London.

The midfielder joined Arsenal from Porto in a deal worth up to €40 million in 2022 but struggled to establish himself consistently under Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.

He returned to Porto on loan for the 2024/25 campaign before moving to HSV last season, where regular football helped him rebuild momentum.

Vieira’s pathway into Arteta’s current midfield also appears increasingly difficult given the competition within the Premier League champions’ squad.

HSV nevertheless appear determined to test Arsenal’s position before the window shuts, with Costa’s decision to travel personally demonstrating the seriousness of their interest.

His meeting with Vieira could also prove important because the German club have now directly reinforced their desire to bring him back after his productive spell there.

The remaining issue is reaching a financial compromise with Arsenal, and the presence of other interested clubs mean the Gunners have little immediate incentive to lower their demands substantially.

Costa’s London trip has therefore kept the possibility of Vieira returning to Hamburg alive, but further discussions will be required before a permanent transfer can be completed.
