“What a mess” Alan Shearer predicts the Aston Villa vs Arsenal game

Alan Shearer has predicted the winner of the Arsenal-Aston Villa match on Monday, as Villa recovers from losing several key players in this transfer window.

When it seemed no other player would leave them, Ollie Watkins downed tools to move to Al Hilal in the Saudi Pro League and had to be replaced by Nicolas Jackson before the match.

Unai Emery has lost some of the players who helped him win the Europa League last season, and the Spanish manager is keen to salvage what remains and rebuild as quickly as possible.

This will be a tough season for Villa, and they would have preferred to face Arsenal much later in the campaign than now, with the Gunners clearly one of the toughest clubs in the league for anyone to face.

Arsenal arrive full of confidence

Ahead of the game, Mikel Arteta’s side has won back-to-back competitive games and did so in style, so they will be full of confidence heading into this match.

Arsenal’s recent form has given them plenty of momentum, while Villa continue to deal with significant changes to their squad. The hosts will therefore face a difficult challenge against an Arsenal team that has started the campaign strongly.

Villa will need to find a way to recover from the disruption caused by their departures, while Emery will hope the players who remain can respond positively.

Shearer backs Arsenal for victory

Shearer expects another Arsenal win, considering how badly things have gone for Villa in the transfer market. He predicts via the Metro:

“What a mess at Aston Villa with the manager and Ollie Watkins at loggerheads. You could tell he was pretty angry and rightly so. God knows what they were trying to do, playing out from the back when Brighton loved to do that press.

“It could be a tough season for Villa. They’ve suffered like Newcastle, having to sell their best players, and it’s very difficult to come back from that. Arsenal looked brilliant, and without doubt they’re the team to beat. I’ll say Arsenal three points.”

Shearer’s prediction reflects the contrasting situations of the two clubs. Arsenal are building confidence through positive results, while Villa are attempting to rebuild after losing important players. For now, he believes the Gunners have enough quality to secure another three points.
