Morgan Whittaker Departs Middlesbrough To Sign For Colorado Rapids On Three-Year MLS Deal

Morgan Whittaker has left Middlesbrough to join MLS side Colorado Rapids, bringing an end to his time at the Riverside Stadium.
The 25-year-old forward arrived at Boro in January 2025 for £5m from Plymouth Argyle, going on to make 66 appearances for the club.
Whittaker departs for an undisclosed fee and has signed a three-year contract, with Colorado holding the option to extend by a further year.
He will fill one of the Designated Player slots at the Rapids, who currently sit seventh in the Western Conference.
The club is managed by Englishman Matt Wells, and Whittaker’s arrival is expected to bolster their attacking options significantly.
Whittaker had made five appearances for Boro this season, starting all three Championship fixtures up to the win against West Bromwich Albion on 29 August.
His debut campaign at Middlesbrough was one of contrasting halves, with a difficult opening run followed by an impressive spell of form.
He failed to score in his first 25 matches for the club, and was cheered off the pitch by supporters at Preston North End when substituted during that difficult stretch.
The turnaround came in a victory over Ipswich Town, when he finally broke his duck and went on to score eight goals in his next 12 games, including six in consecutive matches.
That rich vein of form saw him finish as Middlesbrough’s top scorer for the 2024-25 campaign, ending with 14 goals across his 66 appearances for the club.
Despite his impressive individual numbers, Boro’s play-off push ultimately ended in disappointment, with their hopes of reaching the Premier League dashed in the post-season.
Michael Carrick’s side had been in contention for a top-six finish but fell out of play-off contention on the final day of the regular season before the play-off exit.
Middlesbrough have been active in the transfer market this summer, bringing in 12 new players ahead of the new campaign.
Among the arrivals is Brighton winger Amario Cozier-Duberry, who joined on loan and was signed on deadline day to add further depth to the squad.
