Nwaneri heading for Dortmund medical ahead of loan

According to The Athletic, Ethan Nwaneri is set to undergo a medical with Borussia Dortmund ahead of a deadline-day season-long loan move.
Arsenal and the player’s camp are understood to agree that the midfielder needs regular football after falling down the pecking order at the Emirates.
The 19-year-old began last season as Martin Odegaard’s understudy but found opportunities increasingly difficult to come by following the arrival of Eberechi Eze. A six-month loan to Marseille followed in January, although the immediate sacking of Roberto De Zerbi hardly provided the stable environment Nwaneri needed to establish himself in Ligue 1.
The hope is that Dortmund will prove a better fit. The Bundesliga side have a strong reputation for developing young talent, including players from England, and were prompted to make their move after summer signing Giannis Konstantelias suffered an ACL injury.
They’ve also had a recent glimpse of what Nwaneri can offer. He scored against Dortmund during Arsenal’s 3-2 pre-season defeat at the Emirates.
Whether Nwaneri can eventually force his way back into Mikel Arteta’s plans remains to be seen. Around the first team since the age of 15, he impressed when deputising for Bukayo Saka during the 2024/25 campaign, but his path has become increasingly crowded. With Max Dowman coming up behind him, a productive year in Germany could be crucial if he’s to prove he has a long-term future at Arsenal.
