Arsenal hierarchy contacted 20-goal striker on Thursday, response revealed

Arsenal made contact with Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez earlier this week, according to Spanish journalist Gerard Romero.
The Gunners have bolstered their attack with Christos Tzolis this summer, and he has made a good impression in his first two appearances.
The Greek bagged a couple of assists against Manchester City and played a part in the first two goals against Coventry City on Friday night.
Tzolis was signed for £34 million from Club Brugge, and he is already proving a bargain signing.
Meanwhile, Arsenal are still determined to sign a marquee forward, and it is well known that Alvarez has been earmarked as a prime target.
Romero now reports that members of the Arsenal staff contacted Alvarez on Thursday, but he rejected the proposal to join the Gunners.
The Argentine continues to wait for Barcelona in the final days of the transfer window.
Arsenal should put an end to the Alvarez saga
The Gunners have been determined to bring in a marquee attacking player this summer. Morgan Rogers was the initial target, but the Englishman joined Chelsea from Aston Villa.
The Premier League holders then focused on an ambitious move for Real Madrid superstar Vinicius Junior, but the Brazil international signed a new six-year contract with Los Blancos.
The focus has now entirely turned back to Alvarez, who has been a long-term target, but the World Cup winner is quite clear that he is prioritising a move to Barcelona before the deadline.
Atletico are adamant that he won’t be permitted to join the Blaugrana. The La Liga outfit seem open to negotiating with Arsenal as Viktor Gyokeres could be used as a makeweight in the deal.
So far, Alvarez has given no indication that he would like to join the Gunners. The 26-year-old has had a firm stance from the off, and we believe Arsenal should end their interest once and for all.
The striker, who netted 20 goals for Atletico during the 2025/26 season, could open the door for a late deadline-day move if Diego Simeone’s side continue to resist proposals from the Blaugrana.
However, this could create problems for Arsenal a year from now. He could easily push for a transfer to Barcelona next summer. The Gunners should not pursue a striker who is not fully committed to the project.
