Marco Reus And Robert Taylor Fire Los Angeles Galaxy Past New England Revolution
The Los Angeles Galaxy secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the New England Revolution on Saturday night at Carson, California, keeping their playoff hopes very much alive.
Marco Reus opened the scoring in the 11th minute, converting a penalty kick after Will Sands fouled Ky?go Furuhashi inside the box, earning himself a yellow card in the process.
The 37-year-old chipped the ball into the centre of the net, marking his fifth goal of the season and his 11th in 49 career appearances for the Galaxy.
Reus stands as the only starter from Saturday’s match who also featured in the Galaxy’s last MLS Cup win, which came just 21 months ago.
Robert Taylor doubled the lead in the 33rd minute, finishing a composed right-footed shot past New England goalkeeper Matt Turner to score his first Galaxy goal.
Taylor, who joined from Austin in mid-July, took a pass from Hirving Lozano in the centre of the box and drilled his effort home for his 15th career goal in 119 matches.
The assist was Lozano’s first for the Galaxy since arriving on loan from San Diego less than a month ago, adding another layer of significance to an already memorable evening.
JT Marcinkowski was outstanding in goal, making seven saves as the Galaxy were outshot 24-8 across the 90 minutes, keeping the Revolution at bay for almost the entire match.
Carles Gil pulled one back for New England with a penalty kick six minutes into second-half stoppage time, his eighth goal of the season, after Luca Langoni was fouled by Harbor Miller.
It was a nervy finish, but Marcinkowski’s earlier heroics and some timely interventions from the post ensured the Galaxy held on to collect all three points.
Head coach Greg Vanney started Sergi Roberto, Taylor, Lozano, and Ky?go together for the first time, and was encouraged by what he saw from his evolving squad.
With only 10 matches remaining in the season, Vanney acknowledged the tight race in the Western Conference but remained firmly confident in his team’s ability to string results together.
“I think it’s really tight in the West,” Vanney said. “I haven’t looked at the table tonight, but I know it’s tight in the West, and you just got to get a little bit on a run.”
The result improved the Galaxy’s home record to 4-4-4 and gave the club only their second league win since returning from the World Cup break.
