Arsenal have agreed £7.7m deal to sell 26-year-old, player has passed medical - Journalist

Arsenal midfielder Fabio Vieira has passed his medical with Bundesliga side Hamburg ahead of a permanent transfer, according to Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg.

The Portuguese spent the previous season on loan with Hamburg. He made a good impression with seven goals and six assists from 31 appearances across all competitions.

The German side had a buy clause worth £17.1 million, which they could not afford, and have eventually managed to convince the Gunners to accept a significantly lower price.

Hamburg will reportedly pay a fixed sum of £7.7m for the 26-year-old. There are no bonuses involved at all, but Arsenal have secured a small sell-on clause for the playmaker.

Arsenal set to cut their losses on Vieira

The Gunners signed Vieira as a promising playmaker from Porto in 2022. They made a big outlay of £34m, but the investment has not proved worthwhile over the past four years.

Vieira never really established himself as a regular starter at Arsenal. He registered just two goals and five assists from 32 Premier League appearances under manager Mikel Arteta.

After spending the last two seasons on loan at Porto and Hamburg, respectively, the Portuguese has now been allowed to secure a permanent transfer for a knockdown transfer fee.

Vieira’s performances in the Bundesliga last term showed plenty of promise. Arsenal could have easily secured a higher fee from a Premier League club, but the player had a firm transfer stance.

Plettenberg reports that Vieira only wanted to rejoin Hamburg. The Gunners will hope he can pursue a bigger challenge elsewhere in future, such that they can benefit from the sell-on clause.
