Arteta hints that Arsenal defender could be back in action against Chelsea

Jurrien Timber’s fitness is being carefully managed by Arsenal as the Dutchman has become increasingly affected by injuries since arriving at the Emirates.

He missed the World Cup because of injury, even though he played for Arsenal in the Champions League final, and he is yet to fully recover from the problems that have affected him since last season. His fitness remains an important concern for the Gunners.

Timber is Arsenal’s first choice right back when he is fit, so the Gunners are keen for him to return as soon as possible. Having the Dutchman available would give Mikel Arteta a stronger squad to select from as the season progresses.

Arsenal’s next game is against Chelsea, and Timber could be part of their squad for the match. Arteta has confirmed that the defender has been training with the group over the last few weeks, which provides encouragement about his condition.

Timber could return against Chelsea

The Dutchman may not start the game because Chelsea represent one of the toughest opponents Arsenal will face. However, he is expected to have a chance of being included in the squad if he continues to make positive progress.

If Timber is selected, he could be ready to play if Arsenal need him during the match. That would allow Arteta to manage his minutes carefully while allowing the defender to return to competitive action.

The Gunners will be cautious with Timber because of his recent injury problems. Arsenal do not want to rush him back and risk another setback, particularly when the defender remains an important option at right back.

Arteta reveals Timber is in good condition

Speaking about Timber’s possible return, Arteta explained that the defender is currently in a positive place physically. However, the manager will make the final decision after assessing him following training.

Arteta said via Hayters:

“Yeah, he is in really good condition at the moment. He is in a good place.

“We will decide tomorrow after training.”

Timber will therefore have to wait for the final decision before knowing whether he will be involved against Chelsea. Arsenal will continue to assess him carefully, with the Gunners determined to ensure his return is handled properly.
