Summer signing could debut for Arsenal against Ipswich Town
Arsenal raided Manchester United for James Scanlon in the last transfer window, and the youngster could feature in their League Cup game against Ipswich Town tonight.
The Gunners have been monitoring the best young players in England and believe Scanlon is a top prospect. They acted on that belief and convinced him to move to London, allowing him to continue his development at Arsenal.
Scanlon earns first team opportunity
The 19-year-old can play on the wing or in attacking midfield, and he spent the first half of this year on loan at Swindon Town. He impressed during his time there and was hoping to receive more first-team opportunities at United.
However, Arsenal’s approach turned his head, and he opted to swap Manchester for north London. The move could prove to be a good one for Scanlon, particularly if he can take advantage of opportunities with the senior squad.
The Gunners have plenty of youngsters competing for first-team chances, but Mikel Arteta has shown that if a player wants an opportunity badly enough and works for it, he will provide that chance.
League Cup chance could arrive
Scanlon now has an opportunity to show that he can shine in the Gunners’ senior team, and Standard Sport says he was invited to first-team training ahead of the League Cup game. That could put him in contention for an appearance.
Arsenal will want to win the competition, but they are unlikely to use their best players in these early rounds. That could create a genuine opening for Scanlon to earn valuable minutes and demonstrate what he can offer.
For the young attacker, the League Cup could therefore provide an important opportunity to make an impression. Having recently made the move from United to Arsenal, he now has the chance to show that he can compete for a place in the Gunners’ senior side.
