Steven Gerrard Says Tottenham Hotspur Are Stoppable Without Harry Kane, Gareth Bale Or Son Heung-min
Steven Gerrard has delivered a blunt assessment of Tottenham Hotspur, arguing that opponents no longer fear facing them in the way they once did.
The former Liverpool captain believes the departure of genuine world-class talent has left Spurs without the kind of player who can change a game single-handedly.
Gerrard pointed specifically to Harry Kane, Gareth Bale, and Son Heung-min as players who once made Tottenham a genuinely dangerous proposition for any opponent.
Kane left for Bayern Munich as the club’s all-time leading scorer, while Son Heung-min departed for Los Angeles and Major League Soccer last summer.
Speaking on TNT Sports inside the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Gerrard said: “I think Tottenham have signed good quality players, and you can see the squad is littered with really good players.”
He continued: “But I look at this Tottenham team, and I do not see that world-class superstar. Your Harry Kanes, obviously, he has moved on.”
Gerrard was unambiguous in his conclusion, adding: “If you are playing against this Spurs team, or coming up against them as an opposition player or coach, I think they are stoppable. I do not see any of the players that would strike fear into me.”
Speaking after Tottenham’s defeat to Aston Villa, Gerrard acknowledged that certain areas of the squad have been strengthened considerably in recent transfer windows.
“I think the midfield has become stronger with Tonali, Fernandes and Bentancur. That is a strong midfield. And you have Conor Gallagher, who perhaps deserved to start today. So I don’t think the midfield is a big problem,” he said.
Defensively, however, Gerrard was far less complimentary, identifying the backline as a persistent weakness that continues to undermine the team’s results.
“Tottenham are weak and a little fragile at the back, and they concede too many goals,” he said. “If your two centre-backs are unable to deal with long balls, then you will face problems.”
The pundit also turned his attention to what he called a fundamental error in Tottenham’s transfer strategy, specifically around their failure to sign a proven goalscorer.
“I think Tottenham have improved in some areas, but the big problem lies in the attacking side, specifically the lack of goals,” Gerrard argued.
He directed criticism firmly at those responsible for shaping the squad, saying: “The recruitment officials and those who made the decisions to sign this type of player have to look at each other and say: we didn’t go out to sign a player who scores 20 goals a season.”
Gerrard concluded with a stark warning for supporters, drawing a direct comparison to what Kane provided for so many years at the club.
“Either you keep clean sheets, and that keeps you in a safe position in the table, or you have exceptional goalscorers in your team, as Harry Kane did for many years,” he said. “Those players score the number of goals that keeps you at the top of the table.”
