SBV Excelsior host FC Utrecht at Stadion Woudestein in Rotterdam on Sunday in an Eredivisie fixture that pits a settled fourth-placed side against a struggling visitor still searching for its first league win of the season.

Ruben den Uil's compact, counterattacking Excelsior side arrive full of confidence after an efficient start to the season, while Anthony Correia is already firefighting at Utrecht, whose defence has been picked apart on a near-weekly basis and whose supporters made unwanted headlines eight days earlier.

Excelsior sit fourth in the Eredivisie table with 10 points from five matches, a return built on a defence that has conceded only five goals all season.

Den Uil's side have lost just once in the league this term, a run that includes back-to-back wins at home to Sparta Rotterdam (2-1) and away at Willem II (3-0), the latter underlining how effective Excelsior can be once they get in behind opponents.

That momentum was checked in midweek when Noe Lebreton's stoppage-time equaliser rescued a 2-2 draw for NEC Nijmegen in a fixture played on Tuesday, denying Excelsior a third straight victory despite the visitors managing only 31 percent possession and still carving out four big chances.

David Garden leads the goalscoring charts with three goals, while Irakli Yegoian has already supplied four assists from midfield, repeatedly turning defensive stops into rapid transitions up the pitch.

Excelsior have scored 12 goals in five matches, a tally that, combined with their meagre goals-against column, gives them the healthiest goal difference of any side outside the top three.

History adds an extra layer of intrigue given Utrecht had gone 12 league meetings unbeaten against Excelsior before the corresponding fixture on April 26, 2026, when Excelsior produced a stunning 5-0 victory, the club's most emphatic result of the calendar year.

Utrecht head to Rotterdam 15th with just two points from five matches, a wretched return for a club that finished sixth last season and appointed Anthony Correia, fresh from guiding Telstar to Eredivisie safety, as Ron Jans's successor over the summer.

Correia's rebuild has stumbled badly out of the blocks, with three defeats from the opening five fixtures, a run that has brought losses by 1-2 to FC Groningen, 1-4 to AZ Alkmaar and 1-6 to PSV Eindhoven, either side of a laboured 3-3 draw with Sparta Rotterdam.

That home match against PSV alone accounted for six of the 18 goals Utrecht have now conceded in five league games, an average of 3.6 per match, and the club has yet to keep a single clean sheet this season.

The visit of Go Ahead Eagles last weekend produced the club's most chaotic afternoon yet: Utrecht trailed 3-0 through goals from Mathis Suray, Soren Tengstedt and Victor Edvardsen, and after Dani de Wit pulled one back to make it 1-3, sections of the Bunnikside ultras threw fireworks and then plastic cups onto the pitch, forcing referee Martin van den Kerkhof to abandon the contest for good after 65 minutes.

The KNVB ordered the remaining 26 minutes to be played out behind closed doors on Tuesday, and with Go Ahead still 3-1 ahead from where the original match had been halted, Utrecht completed a remarkable comeback when Matisse Didden headed home a corner before Artem Stepanov converted a stoppage-time penalty, won for a foul on Adrian Blake, to complete an extraordinary 3-3 draw.

The result did little to paper over Utrecht's defensive problems, and Stepanov, on loan from Bayer Leverkusen, has emerged as the one consistent attacking outlet with four goals already, leaving Correia needing far more protection in front of his back three if that early promise is not to be wasted on a lost campaign.

Simon Janssen started and played 45 minutes of Wednesday's draw at NEC before being withdrawn for Kasey Bos, which points to squad rotation rather than injury, so Den Uil should have his first-choice wing-back available for this one.

Noah Naujoks has been out since August 15 with the club targeting this exact fixture for his comeback, Stijn van Gassel is expected to continue in goal behind a back three of Casper Widell, Jan Plug and Rick Meissen, the same defensive unit that has underpinned Excelsior's meagre concession rate all season.

Correia's injury list is considerably longer, with Joris van Overeem, Niklas Vesterlund, Alonzo Engwanda, Kevin Paredes, Miliano Jonathans, Marius Broholm and Victor Jensen all unavailable for the trip to Rotterdam.

Noah Ohio remains a longer-term absentee too, still working his way back from surgery on a torn patellar tendon suffered while on loan at Real Valladolid earlier this year.

That leaves Correia with little margin for further injuries in central areas, and it is little surprise that Vasilios Barkas, Nikolas Panagiotou, Guus Offerhaus and Matisse Didden are all expected to retain their places from the Go Ahead Eagles comeback.

Excelsior's compact defensive shape has been the foundation of their strong start, and a Utrecht side that has conceded 18 goals in five matches without a clean sheet is unlikely to find the away trip any more comfortable than its previous five outings.

Stepanov's penalty-box instincts mean Utrecht should have enough quality to score, but the gap between the two defences, combined with Excelsior's efficiency in front of goal through Garden and Yegoian, points to a narrow home win.

The reverse fixture in April ended in a one-sided 5-0 rout, and while a repeat of that scoreline looks unlikely given Correia's side has shown real fight in salvaging a point against Go Ahead Eagles, the underlying numbers still favour the hosts to move closer to parity in a head-to-head record that has traditionally leaned Utrecht's way, with 32 wins from the 50 previous Eredivisie meetings between the two clubs.
