Ryan Giggs names £30m star as favourite Arsenal player

Former Manchester United forward Ryan Giggs has described Martin Odegaard as his favorite player at Arsenal.

Odegaard, who joined the Gunners in a £30 million deal from Real Madrid, has enjoyed a brilliant start to the campaign, scoring four goals in six appearances across all competitions.

The Norway international has yet to record an assist in the league, but ranks second for expected assists, big chances created and key passes per game in the division.

Odegaard was nominated for August’s Arsenal Player of the Month award and the Premier League Player of the Month award, but lost to Riccardo Calafiori and Chelsea’s Joao Pedro in both categories.

Asked about his favourite Arsenal player on Rio Ferdinand Presents, Giggs hailed the 27-year-old, highlighting his crucial roles on and off the ball and explaining why he is his kind of player.

“Odegaard, at the moment, it looks as if he is controlling games, getting the ball off the back four, running in behind. It is like he’s just everywhere.”

His excellent start to the campaign is refreshing, given his struggles with injuries and consistency last season.

The Stromsgodset academy graduate scored just once in 36 appearances last term, three fewer than he has already scored this term.

He should also start registering assists soon, given how great his underlying creative numbers are.

Odegaard’s impressive performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup may also have contributed to his outstanding form. He registered four goal involvements to help Norway reach the Round of 16.

Manager Mikel Arteta will be hoping that the Norwegian midfielder maintains his consistency and stays injury-free throughout the campaign as they seek to compete on all fronts.

Odegaard is unlikely to start in Tuesday’s Carabao Cup third-round clash at Ipswich Town due to rotation.
