'Remarkable': Alan Shearer blown away by Arsenal star who completed 92% passes on Int'l duty

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has heaped praise on Arsenal midfielder Myles Lewis-Skelly following his progress as a midfielder this campaign.

The England international had a brilliant breakthrough season with the Gunners in 2024/25, where he played exclusively as a left-back under manager Mikel Arteta.

However, he had a tough second year. Lewis-Skelly hardly started as a left-back in the Premier League, with competition from Piero Hincapie and Riccardo Calafiori.

In the end, the 19-year-old got a surprise opportunity in midfield. Martin Zubimendi’s drastic dip in form paved the way for Lewis-Skelly to start during the final month of last season.

He has continued in the centre of the park for the Gunners this term despite Bruno Guimaraes’ arrival and recently delivered a strong performance from the same position for England against Spain.

Despite a 3-2 Nations League defeat, Three Lions boss Thomas Tuchel said that Lewis-Skelly was ‘just very good‘ and Shearer has added that the Gunners graduate has been ‘remarkable’ in midfield.

He said on The Rest is Football podcast after the Spain game: “I know he played in midfield last season, but his rise this season to go into Arsenal and into England’s midfield has been remarkable.”

Lewis-Skelly made his first England start as a midfielder alongside Anderson last week. He made an early error with a loose pass, which created a chance for the World Cup champions.

However, he grew in confidence in his role as the game progressed. Lewis-Skelly was dribbled past twice, but also drove forward himself and was efficient with his overall distribution.

The youngster completed an impressive 92 percent of his passes against Spain. He also won four duels alongside two clearances, two interceptions, two recoveries and one tackle.

England take on Czechia on the road on Tuesday night. Lewis-Skelly is most likely to continue in the heart of the midfield after his solid performance against La Roja at Wembley.
