Opinion: Lewis-Skelly cannot afford bad games in an Arsenal shirt now
Myles Lewis Skelly was one of the players many expected to leave Arsenal at the end of last season, even though he finally broke into their midfield during the final matches of the campaign.
However, he remained with the team and was eager to prove his worth this season, despite the risk of not getting enough playing time at the Emirates. So far, the midfielder has surprised some supporters by earning a place in the team, keeping the likes of Mikel Merino and Martin Zubimendi on the bench.
Both are World Cup winners, and for them to be left out in favour of Lewis Skelly shows that the midfielder has genuinely impressed Mikel Arteta with his performances in training and his attitude.
Lewis-Skelly Must Maintain His Level
The Arsenal manager will always select players based on merit, but Lewis Skelly could be losing ground after struggling during the game against Sunderland.
It was the second consecutive match in which he has not been at his best, and he is taking a significant gamble by failing to take his opportunities now that the Gunners are giving him starts.
The midfielder has been handed a valuable opportunity to establish himself as an important member of the team, but competition for places remains fierce. Arsenal have several players capable of stepping into his position if his performances begin to drop.
Competition Is Growing at Arsenal
The World Cup winners on the bench are waiting for an opportunity to replace him, while Bruno Guimaraes is also a player who should be starting games.
That leaves Lewis Skelly with little room for complacency. His recent performances could give Arteta a reason to consider other options, particularly if the midfielder fails to produce the level expected of him in upcoming matches.
If Lewis Skelly struggles to make an impact in another game, he could lose his place for a long time. His strong start to the season has put him in an excellent position, but he must now maintain his level and show that he deserves to remain ahead of the experienced players competing for his position.
