Mikel Merino reveals major fear he faced during four-month Arsenal absence

Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino has revealed he faced the frightening uncertainty of whether he would ever play football again during his recovery from a serious foot injury.

Merino suffered a bone injury in his right foot during Arsenal’s Premier League defeat to Manchester United on January 25, forcing him to undergo surgery the following month.

The setback came at a crucial stage of Arsenal’s title-winning campaign and initially raised concerns over whether the Spain international would recover in time for the 2026 World Cup.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said after the operation that doctors were pleased with the procedure but warned that Merino faced a lengthy rehabilitation period while the bone healed.

Merino has now opened up about the mental challenge of that recovery in an interview with Spanish television channel laSexta.

“When you get hit with a blow like this, you have to accept that life isn’t always going to give you smiles,” Merino said.

The midfielder admitted the uncertainty surrounding his recovery was particularly difficult as he contemplated the possibility that his playing career could be affected permanently.

“There will come a time when you will have to fight against the uncertainty of not knowing if you will ever play football again,” he added.

Merino eventually spent around four months recovering, with the rehabilitation process reportedly lasting approximately 115 days.

His return came in time to earn a place in Spain’s squad for the World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico, where he played his part as La Roja went on to win the tournament.

The achievement represented a remarkable turnaround after his participation had been placed in serious doubt only months earlier.

Merino believes the experience also changed his perspective away from football and taught him how to cope with circumstances outside his control.

“It taught me how to deal with frustration,” he said.”That opened my eyes, to accept that I am not just a footballer and that there is much more to life.”

The 30-year-old has since returned to Arsenal following the summer tournament and remains an important option for Arteta because of his ability to operate in midfield and further forward.

His recovery also prevented the injury from becoming a longer-term setback after Arteta initially admitted Arsenal could not determine whether his absence would last three, four or five months.

Merino can now look back on that uncertainty from a considerably better position, having recovered sufficiently to become a world champion before resuming his Arsenal career.
