Mikel Arteta agrees to Arsenal contract extension
Mikel Arteta and Arsenal have agreed to a long-term contract extension, per multiple reports. The manager’s current contract was set to expire at the end of this season in June 2027, but there wasn’t ever any reported concern that the deal wouldn’t happen. Arteta’s regular line was that he wants to be at the club and the deal would get done “when the time is right” and it would seem that time is now.
Arteta’s new contract provides for a “sharp” pay raise over the £10M per year plus £5M bonus for Champions League qualification, per Sami Mokbel. As of now, there is no confirmation of the length of the deal, but Mokbel reports that it will take him at least beyond 2029, which will be his 10th year at the club.
The Spaniard was going to get a contract extension to remain it Arsenal. It wasn’t going to go any other way. He’s more than earned it, too. Think back to when he took over the club. Things were bad and heading in the wrong direction. He turned things around relatively quickly, had the club competing to win the Premier League a bit ahead of schedule in ‘22-’23, fell just short in ‘23-’24, had an injury-hampered ‘24-’25, before finally ending the 22-year title drought last season.
It all seems to be working at Arsenal right now. Mikel Arteta demands excellence from his players and everyone at the club and they’ve responded in kind. At the same time, it feels like there is a real collective spirit at the club. Everyone is on the same page, enjoys being and working together, and is pulling in the same direction. And despite his intensity, which I’m certain can be grating / tiring at times, the players and people at the club really seem to like Mikel Arteta.
Obviously, the goal is to win more trophies in the next few years with Arteta at the helm. The Champions League looms large as the one thing our decorated club has not won. Defending the Premier League title would be pretty awesome as would quickly taking it back if the team surrenders the crown this season. They’ve kept the core of the squad intact and added proven, veteran players to the mix to maximize the current window. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
Arsenal are very much in win-now mode, as well they should be. But they also must keep an eye to the middle- and long-term future. For what it’s worth, I’d bet Mikel Arteta and the folks running the club are very aware of that part, too. This contract will see the Spaniard at the helm into and through those transition years — the transition being from the current core of players to a new, younger one, likely with at least some of the current squad still around. The challenge facing Arteta and Arsenal is keeping the club competitive at the pinnacle of the sport as the roster turns over and balancing winning in the present with (re)building a team capable of sustained winning season-over-season.
But that’s a “problem” for next summer and transfer windows after that. Right now, Arsenal are fully focused on filling up the trophy cabinet. Keeping the guy in charge who led you to the biggest one after more than two decades in the wilderness seems like a no-brainer. The new contract will likely be officially announced some time in the coming days / weeks.
