Michael Owen comments on Declan Rice’s chance of winning Ballon d’Or

Declan Rice has been nominated for the Ballon d’Or alongside Jude Bellingham, although both midfielders face a difficult challenge if they are to win the prestigious individual award.

Since Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo stopped being the main contenders for the honour, the Ballon d’Or has become more difficult to predict, with several players competing for recognition.

Harry Kane is another Englishman on the list this time, and some experts believe he could become the latest Englishman to win the award in more than 20 years. The last English winner was Michael Owen.

For midfielders such as Rice and Bellingham, winning the award is particularly difficult, despite both players being among the top 30 nominees. Their inclusion gives them a chance to compete for the honour, but their prospects remain a major talking point ahead of the ceremony.

Owen discusses Bellingham’s chances

Owen has commented on the chances of Rice and Bellingham succeeding and believes something special would have to happen for either player to come close to winning the Ballon d’Or.

Speaking via Goal, Owen said, “The stars really do have to align. But the likes of the people that you mentioned there, in particular Jude Bellingham, that’s got a bit of stardust about him, then absolutely. He’s playing at the right team that can win the right trophies, and if he is the starring role, starring performer in England having a good major tournament, then that’s the type of thing that can win you it.”

Owen’s comments suggest that Bellingham’s performances for both his club and England could be important to his chances. He particularly highlighted the importance of winning major trophies and making a significant impact for England during a major tournament.

Rice and Bellingham face a difficult challenge

Both Rice and Bellingham have earned places among the Ballon d’Or nominees, but the competition for the award remains strong. Their positions in midfield can also make it harder for them to receive the same recognition as players who regularly produce decisive attacking numbers.

For Bellingham, Owen believes his profile and ability to perform on major stages could help him if circumstances align. Rice will also be hoping his performances can put him in contention as he looks to challenge for one of football’s most prestigious individual honours.

The Ballon d’Or remains open to several contenders, leaving Rice and Bellingham with a significant challenge as they look to make their mark among the nominees.
