Merino spots Lamine Yamal similarity in Arsenal sensation Max Dowman

Mikel Merino believes Arsenal sensation Max Dowman shares some of the qualities that have helped Barcelona star Lamine Yamal emerge as one of world football’s leading young players.

Dowman strengthened his rapidly growing reputation with two goals as Arsenal beat Ipswich Town 4-2 in the Carabao Cup third round on Tuesday night.

The 16-year-old opened the scoring after just seven minutes before adding another shortly after half-time, becoming only the second player of his age to score twice in a match for a Premier League club after Wayne Rooney.

Merino, who also scored at Portman Road, has now compared his Arsenal teammate’s mentality with Yamal, whom he knows from the Spain national team.

“Yeah, I would say there are some similarities in terms of their character,” Merino said . “They don’t care about the spotlight, they thrive when pressure is at the highest, they are always up for the challenge and they are not shy at all.”

Yamal became a Barcelona first-team regular while still 16 and has since developed into one of the game’s biggest stars, playing a major role in Spain’s Euro 2024 and 2026 World Cup triumphs.

Dowman’s senior career remains at a considerably earlier stage, but he has already demonstrated an unusual ability to influence matches against experienced opposition.

The Hale End graduate became the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history at 16 years and 73 days against Everton in March before becoming the competition’s youngest-ever title winner later that season.

Merino believes Dowman’s talent must now be carefully managed as Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta continues to balance opportunities with the teenager’s long-term development.

“Honestly, he is an unbelievable talent,” Merino added. “We knew it, but every time he goes on the pitch and plays against grown men – even being 16 or 17 – he makes the difference.”

Merino also stressed that Dowman remains eager to learn despite the attention surrounding his emergence, describing that humility as one of his most encouraging characteristics.

Arteta has similarly resisted calls to immediately give the youngster a permanent starting role, insisting his opportunities must continue to be earned.

Dowman’s performance against Ipswich nevertheless provided another compelling argument for increased involvement.

Arsenal have one of English football’s most exciting young talents on their hands, and Merino’s comparison with Yamal underlines just how highly Dowman is already regarded inside the dressing room.
