Many positives on eventual night for Arsenal academy

It was a very impressive night for the Arsenal academy on Tuesday, with a youth-inspired first-team side beating Ipswich in the Carabao Cup, while the U21s secured a 2-1 win against Leyton Orient in the EFL Trophy.

The scheduling of both games on the same night certainly wasn’t ideal but Arsenal managed to make the most of the situation.

Max Dowman, making his first senior appearance of the campaign, scored two goals and was excellent overall, while Marli Salmon gave a good account of himself at centre-back.

There were further positives as Theo Julienne was brought on for his competitive senior debut and Ife Ibrahim made his second first-team appearance.

The U21s found themselves 1-0 down against Orient but managed to equalise through Archie Stevens before substitute Andre Harriman-Annous got the winner.

This victory was much-needed for the U21s following their heavy defeat against Barnet in the opening game and they now have a chance of progression to the knockout stages when they take on AFC Wimbledon next month.

Emerson Nwaneri, 16, started the game on the left wing and made an impact in the first half, while defender Daniel McCarron made his U21s debut as a substitute.

The wide-reaching impact of the Arsenal academy was also evident in both opposition sides last night, with Hale End graduate Chuba Akpom scoring for Ipswich while Isaac Hayden, Joseph Olowu and Fin Stevens all featured for Orient.
