Liverpool Target Lamine Camara, Adam Wharton And Aleksandar Stankovic As Midfield Reinforcements In January
Liverpool are preparing to strengthen their midfield options during the January transfer window, with Monaco’s Lamine Camara emerging as a key target for the club.
The Reds were left slightly lighter in central midfield following the summer departure of Curtis Jones, though manager Andoni Iraola still has reasonable depth in that area of the pitch.
Liverpool opted against signing a direct replacement for Jones before the summer deadline closed, choosing instead to monitor the market carefully ahead of January.
According to TEAMtalk, the club have now identified a three-man shortlist that includes Camara, Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton, and Inter Milan youngster Aleksandar Stankovic.
Of the three options, Camara appears to be the most realistic and most likely preferred target heading into the winter window.
The Senegal international came extremely close to joining Chelsea on deadline day after Monaco accepted a deal worth around €55 million, only for the transfer to collapse at the last minute.
Sky Sports confirmed that Chelsea had agreed a £47 million transfer before Monaco pulled out of the deal, despite Camara completing a medical and being ready to sign a six-year contract.
Monaco are now reportedly willing to consider offers closer to €60 million in January, while Camara himself remains interested in making the move to the Premier League.
Liverpool have maintained contact around his situation and previously informed both the player and Monaco that they could return in 2027 if he remained in France.
At just 22 years old, Camara already carries significant international experience and possesses the energy, athleticism, and ball-carrying ability that suits Iraola’s high-intensity style of play.
Wharton represents a more proven Premier League option but Crystal Palace are expected to demand at least £75 million, which would make that deal considerably more difficult to finalise.
Stankovic would likely come at a lower cost and carries genuine upside as a young talent, though he remains less established than the other two candidates on Liverpool’s shortlist.
That places Camara in a middle ground that makes him particularly attractive: young, internationally experienced, and available at a price that has already been tested in the market.
Liverpool were prudent not to panic after Jones departed in the summer, but January could present a genuine opportunity to add quality that was not available during the previous window.
