Liverpool: Alexis Mac Allister will earn new contract if he does this - "Without a shadow of a doubt"

Alexis Mac Allister will put himself in the frame for a new Liverpool contract if he excels over the next six months, and ex-Reds man has exclusively told Sports Mole.

The Argentina international - whose current terms expire in the summer of 2028 - recently dropped the bombshell that he was informed Liverpool were not in a position to offer him a new deal.

Mac Allister's comments came the day before Liverpool beat Atletico Madrid 2-1 in the Champions League, thanks to a winner from the South American himself after Dominik Szoboszlai had cancelled out a Marcos Llorente effort.

Mac Allister's crucial contribution was perfectly-timed after his contract comments, and triggered renewed calls for him to be tied down to fresh terms, even after his underwhelming 2025-26 campaign.

However, former Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant has insisted that Mac Allister must keep the momentum going for half a year if he is to play his way into a new deal.

“If you’re just going on form, you’d probably say no," Pennant replied when asked about Mac Allister's chances of a new contract. "But he’s been there a long time. He’s helped them achieve and win what they’ve won.

"He was in the Team of the Year. He was probably one of the best players for the team that won the league. And he’s still got two years left on his contract.

"Once that contract rolls to 18 months, and he puts in decent performances, I’m sure, without a shadow of a doubt, that Liverpool will be offering him a new contract.

“But I understand he’s frustrated. He’s seeing his teammates in similar positions around him, doing the same job, getting new deals. So, you understand a bit of bitterness.

“But I’m sure, with two years left on his contract, over the next six months, if he continues to play well, I think he’ll get a new deal.”

Mac Allister is still on the same terms he penned at Anfield when he arrived from Brighton & Hove Albion three years ago, while Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch have been rewarded with extensions.

The Argentine under-performed during Liverpool's tragic 2025-26 title defence, but after a stellar World Cup with Argentina, the green shoots of domestic recovery are also there.

Mac Allister also appears to be more in favour with Andoni Iraola than Gravenberch, who has failed to make the first XI in each of Liverpool's last three matches, but the former has begun all of them.

Mac Allister has therefore won Iraola's trust, and if the 27-year-old repays that faith on a consistent basis, it will be a case of when rather than if he is pictured with the pen and paper.

The midfielder has scored 20 goals and set up 20 more in 154 matches for Liverpool, and he is expected to keep his place in the XI when the Reds face Fulham on Saturday.
