Lionel Messi Caught In Heated Confrontation With MLS Commissioner Don Garber After Campeones Cup Victory

Lionel Messi was caught on video in an intense exchange with MLS commissioner Don Garber following Inter Miami’s Campeones Cup final win over Cruz Azul.
The incident took place on the field in Miami during postgame celebrations on Wednesday, with the 39-year-old wagging his finger directly in Garber’s face.
After the initial confrontation, Messi briefly moved away and offered a hug to someone nearby before circling back to say something further to the commissioner.
A second clip showed Garber pointing his finger back at Messi as the Argentine star walked away shaking his head, suggesting the exchange remained unresolved.
The exact cause of the confrontation remains unclear, though the two men have a well-documented history of public disagreements stretching back several years.
Messi joined Major League Soccer in 2023 under a landmark deal that included revenue-sharing partnerships giving the Argentine a direct cut of Apple TV subscriptions and Adidas merchandise sales.
Tensions flared notably in 2025 when Messi and teammate Jordi Alba were each handed one-match suspensions after the former Barcelona stars chose to skip the MLS All-Star Game.
Inter Miami owner Jorge Mas told reporters at the time that Messi was “extremely upset” by the suspension, with the club publicly voicing its displeasure over the decision.
Garber himself acknowledged the complexity of the situation, describing it as a “complicated decision” while the club continued to push back against the league’s handling of the matter.
The commissioner also revealed in a July interview that Messi had previously taken issue with the league’s refereeing standards, referencing one particularly difficult match that sparked frustration from the star.
Despite those tensions, Garber spoke positively about Messi’s overall competitive mentality, telling Front Office Sports: “That’s why he is Messi.”
Wednesday’s confrontation adds another notable chapter to what has proven to be a complex and occasionally fractious relationship between the sport’s biggest name and the man who runs its most prominent North American league.
