“It should have been six or seven” Shearer delivers damning Arsenal verdict

Alan Shearer has delivered a damning assessment of Arsenal’s performance at Brighton, claiming the Gunners were “absolutely battered” and fortunate the margin of defeat was not considerably greater.

Saturday’s 3-0 humiliating loss at the Amex brought Arsenal crashing back down to earth after their strong start to the campaign and inevitably raised questions over whether the defeat was simply one dreadful afternoon or something more concerning.

We have already looked at whether Arsenal’s title defence is coming under early pressure, but Shearer clearly believes the scoreline could have been even more painful.

Shearer stunned by Brighton’s dominance

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, in comments reported by The Standard, Shearer was unequivocal about what he had witnessed at the Amex.

“They absolutely battered Arsenal.”

The former England striker also felt Brighton could easily have added to their three goals, saying:

“It should have been six or seven goals.”

That perhaps sums up just how uncomfortable an afternoon this was for Mikel Arteta’s side.

Shearer particularly highlighted Brighton’s intensity and willingness to take the game to Arsenal.

“They were strong, they were fit, they went after Arsenal.”

Arsenal have been given a clear warning

Those comments are even more striking when placed alongside Arteta’s own reaction following the defeat.

The Arsenal boss warned that “this can’t happen again” after expressing his disappointment with the standards his team produced.

It is difficult to argue with Shearer’s assessment based on what we witnessed.

A 3-0 defeat is bad enough, but the bigger concern was how convincingly Brighton controlled proceedings and how rarely Arsenal looked capable of changing the direction of the match.

One poor performance does not define a season, but Arsenal certainly cannot afford to make afternoons like this a habit.

The important thing now is how Arteta and his players respond.
