Ipswich vs Arsenal head-to-head: Results in the last 5 meetings

Arsenal are still top of the Premier League, but they take a break from action in the division this week as they take on Ipswich Town in the EFL Cup. The Gunners lost in the final of the competition last season to Manchester City. Mikel Arteta's side's priorities will be elsewhere, but the Gunners will still be looking to go one better.

Ipswich Town have had a mixed start to life back in the Premier League. Gary O'Neil's side beat Sunderland on the opening weekend. However, this was followed by a heavy defeat to Manchester United and then a loss to Liverpool. The Tractor Boys did get a dramatic late victory over Crystal Palace last weekend. Ipswich have also already had an EFL Cup game this season, where they defeated Leicester City comfortably.

Arsenal and Ipswich have met infrequently over the last 25 years, as the Tractor Boys have spent a lot of this time outside of the Premier League. A Ljungberg brace saw off Ipswich at Highbury in the 2001/02 campaign. That season, Ipswich were relegated from the Premier League and did not return for 22 years.

Ipswich and Arsenal met in the EFL Cup during the 2010/11 season. Ipswich won the first leg of the semi-final at Portman Road. However, the Gunners turned it around with a convincing aggregate win at the Emirates. Arsenal went on to lose to Birmingham City in the final of that tournament.

Arsenal finally played Ipswich again when Ipswich were back in the Premier League for the 2024/25 season. The Gunners won on both occasions that campaign, as the Tractor Boys were relegated again.

After just one season back in the Championship, Ipswich were promoted again under Kieran McKenna. However, following promotion, McKenna surprisingly left the club and was replaced by Gary O'Neil. He had been managing in Ligue 1 with Strasbourg after spells in the Premier League with Wolverhampton Wanderers and AFC Bournemouth.

Ipswich's goal will be to stay in the Premier League, so they too may field a second string XI for this fixture. O'Neil has only been in post at the club since the summer, so this is a good opportunity for him to play some of his fringe players.

Arteta's priorities this campaign are to defend their Premier League title and go one better in the Champions League. Winning the domestic cup competitions would be seen as a bonus.
