How are Arsenal’s summer academy signings settling in?
It was a very busy summer for the Arsenal academy in terms of incomings, with a host of players joining the club at U21 and U18 levels.
Here’s a look at how each player has fared so far.
Elijah Upson is quietly starting to establish himself in Arsenal’s U21 side with some encouraging performances.
Usually deployed as a left-sided centre-back, Upson reads the game well and is strong aerially. There have been a couple of errors but the majority of the 18-year-old’s performances have been to a high standard and he also featured for the U19s in the UEFA Youth League.
James Scanlon joined Arsenal with a vast amount of experience at U21 level from his time at Manchester United.
The Gibraltar international scored on his debut for Arsenal U21s against Brighton and followed that up with another goal against Chelsea.
Although he usually plays on the left wing, the 19-year-old has also been used as an attacking midfielder at times and has demonstrated his passing range.
Habeeb Ogunneye also made the switch from Manchester United to Arsenal but the right-back hasn’t had the same fortune as Scanlon so far.
Ogunneye featured for the U21s against Brighton but then suffered an injury during the game against Chelsea that left him on crutches.
It remains to be seen how long the 20-year-old will be out for but it is hoped that he will soon get a chance to show what he is capable of in Arsenal colours.
Following a protracted pursuit, Igor Tyjon finally joined Arsenal from Blackburn Rovers last month.
Tyjon (pictured) provided an assist on his debut for the U19s against Napoli and has also been involved with the U21s, for whom he has mainly played on the left wing.
It is evident that Tyjon works very hard for the team and has good technical ability, while he will be looking to score his first Arsenal goal after the international break.
Daniel McCarron has established himself as a regular starter in the Arsenal U18 team after linking up with the club in the summer.
The Northern Ireland youth international, an imposing centre-back, also made his competitive debut for Arsenal U21s last week as he featured as a substitute against Leyton Orient in the EFL Trophy.
Axel Donczew joined Arsenal from Cardiff and has wasted little time in showing everybody what he is capable of.
The 16-year-old, who can play in midfield or out wide, is an excellent dribbler and enjoyed a fine display for the U18s against Norwich as he scored and provided an assist. Donczew has also played in the UEFA Youth League.
Forward Mylo Bernard made his debut for Arsenal U18s against Norwich having trained with the first-team the previous day.
There is much excitement about the signing of Bernard as well as the acquisition of Vincent Joseph from Liverpool, with the latter, who is also a striker, having to wait until after the international break to make his Arsenal debut.
