'He just kicked me': Martin Odegaard provides big injury update after reckless Bernardo Silva challenge

Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard was left fuming following a reckless challenge from Bernardo Silva during Sunday’s Nations League clash between Norway and Portugal.

Norway suffered a disappointing 2-1 defeat on their home turf yesterday. They gave a good account of themselves but were let down by a goalkeeping error from Orjan Nyland.

Nyland made another huge blunder shortly after, but an offside decision saved his blushes.

Odegaard had a good outing despite the defeat. He created a big chance for Erling Haaland in the opening half, and his free-kick indirectly contributed to the equaliser (1-1).

Towards the end of the game, Real Madrid’s Silva made a reckless challenge on Odegaard.

The Norwegian had already passed the ball, but Silva still went on to kick Odegaard’s ankle with visible intent. He showed no remorse after the game, saying that ‘it’s just football’.

Odegaard was unimpressed by the former Manchester City man and said that he ‘completely lost his head’. He added that he took a knock to his ankle but hopes it will be fine over the next few days.

He said via Dagbladet: “He completely lost his head. He just kicked me down long after I’d played the ball. I took a knock to the ankle. It probably won’t feel great tonight, but I’m hoping it clears up over the next few days.”

Odegaard has been in sublime form since the World Cup. He delivered four assists at the global tournament and has gone on to shine for Arsenal with four goals this campaign.

The 27-year-old also delivered two assists for Norway during the recent 3-2 Nations League win over Denmark. He could have had another yesterday, but Haaland failed to convert a big chance.

Despite the loss against Portugal, Odegaard was one of the best players on the pitch alongside Sander Berge. His fitness is now a concern after he was spotted limping off the pitch after the game.

The Gunners skipper was visibly in pain after the kick from Silva, and it remains to be seen whether he will recover in time for the trip to Wales on Thursday night. He will obviously start if deemed fit.

Arsenal are not in Premier League action until October 10 against Leeds United at the Emirates Stadium, but the coaching staff will no doubt contact Norway about Odegaard’s current condition.

The Gunners have already seen Kai Havertz pick up a hamstring injury last week. The German striker could be a big doubt for the Leeds game, and the club can ill-afford to lose Odegaard’s services.
