Guro Reiten And Jaedyn Shaw Fire Gotham FC Past Racing Louisville In Historic Night
Gotham FC ended a frustrating three-game winless run on Friday night with an impressive 2-1 victory over Racing Louisville in NWSL action.
Norwegian winger Guro Reiten made history in the eighth minute, becoming the first Norwegian player ever to score in National Women’s Soccer League history.
Reiten opened the scoring with a composed left-footed finish after receiving a short corner kick played in by Jaedyn Shaw from the right side.
Jaedyn Shaw was central to everything Gotham produced, contributing a goal and an assist across what was a dominant individual performance from the young forward.
Racing Louisville fought back quickly, levelling in the 17th minute when Kayla Fischer headed home a rebound after Courtney Petersen’s corner kick rattled off the post.
Gotham reclaimed the lead less than a minute into the second half when Sam Kerr laid the ball off to Shaw, who calmly slotted it past the goalkeeper to make it 2-1.
The victory moved Gotham FC to an impressive 14-4-6 on the season and snapped what had been a difficult recent run of results for the New Jersey-based side.
Racing Louisville’s struggles continued with the defeat, leaving them at 7-15-2 and extending their losing run to four consecutive matches.
Elsewhere in the NWSL on Friday, the Kansas City Current and the Orlando Pride shared the spoils in a 2-2 draw that did neither side any particular favours in the standings.
In Los Angeles, Angel City FC and the visiting Denver Summit produced a six-goal thriller that ended 3-3 after a dramatic and constantly shifting contest.
Angel City defender Sarah Gorden intercepted the ball and quickly fed Maiara Niehues, who brought the ball down brilliantly before volleying it home to give Angel City the lead.
The goal was Niehues’ eighth of the season, matching the club’s all-time single-season scoring record for a midfielder in a notable individual milestone.
Denver forward Yuzuki Yamamoto, scoring for the third consecutive game, levelled matters in the 49th minute with a sharp finish from inside the box to make it 1-1.
Lindsey Heaps then scored her first goal for the Summit just one minute later, converting a rebound to put Denver ahead 2-1 inside a breathless two-minute spell.
Janine Sonis extended Denver’s advantage further with a long-range strike in the 61st minute, pushing the Summit into a 3-1 lead and seemingly out of sight.
Angel City responded when Sveindís Jónsdóttir broke forward on a dangerous run and laid the ball off to Prisca Chilufya, who tapped in to pull it back to 3-2.
The goal was initially ruled out for offside before video review overturned the decision, allowing Angel City to keep their hopes of a comeback alive.
Angel City FC, now sitting at 9-8-6, ultimately secured a share of the points as the final whistle confirmed a dramatic 3-3 result, leaving Denver at 8-8-7.
