Freddie Ljungberg names his Premier League favourites

Most people believe Arsenal will retain the Premier League title at the end of this season, and the Gunners have made a superb start to their campaign. However, Manchester City cannot be ignored as the title race begins to take shape.

Arsenal defeated City in the Community Shield, but the Citizens have since won all their league matches and sit second in the table behind Arsenal. Both clubs have the same number of points, with Arsenal holding just a one-goal advantage.

The title race is shaping up to become a two-horse contest, and City are enjoying the type of season that can produce champions, particularly when key moments appear to go their way.

The Citizens were awarded a goal that should not have stood when they faced Manchester United in their last match, and decisions such as that could play an important role over the course of a long season.

Arsenal remain favourites

Enzo Maresca has so far made a comfortable start to life at City, and it is clear that he will want to win the league. However, Freddie Ljungberg still believes the title is Arsenal’s to lose.

The Gunners have built strong momentum under Mikel Arteta, while their ability to win closely contested matches could prove crucial as the season progresses. Ljungberg believes their stability gives them an important advantage over their rivals.

Arsenal have already shown that they can navigate difficult matches, and continuing to collect points could keep them ahead of City in what looks set to be a closely fought battle.

Ljungberg backs the Gunners

Ljungberg believes Arsenal’s familiarity with Arteta’s methods gives them a significant advantage. He said via the Metro:

‘100 per cent, I think they are.

‘I think Arsenal have a massive advantage of having the same manager for a long time and they know exactly how they want to play.

‘It’s going to be tight and as we’ve seen with Arsenal, they’re tight games, but they’re still winning them and that is so key.

‘So 100 per cent, I think Arsenal are the favourites.’

With both teams level on points, the margin for error could be extremely small. Arsenal will therefore need to maintain their impressive consistency if they are to justify their status as favourites and stay ahead of City in the title race.
