Gary Neville has some advice for Martin Odegaard after Arsenal beat Chelsea, ‘He knows what to do’
Martin Odegaard got the winning goal for Arsenal as he continued his good start to the season.
Odegaard’s winner just after half-time was enough for Arsenal to see off Chelsea, who had gone ahead through Morgan Rogers in the opening 90 seconds.
For Odegaard, it’s another big season and one he is looking to make his own after being skipper last season and starring with Norway in the summer.
However, Odegaard’s output in terms of goals has not always been where many feel it should be and according to Gary Neville, that’s where his game can go to the next level.
Gary Neville tells Martin Odegaard he needs to score more goals
Martin Odegaard is very much the engine room for Arsenal and the creative spark. In essence, anything Arsenal do well, goes through him.
However, he netted just three goals last season and for Gary Neville, that needs improvement.
“Can he get the 10-12 goals, the 10-12 assists, that mean he’s got control of the game and with that output and numbers, it would mean he’s seen as one of the best in the league,” Neville said.
“He’s started the season well, he had a good World Cup with Norway, but you’re right, it’s just getting that sort of element, positivity on the half turn, don’t become safe. But when Arsenal need goals, at the start of matches, look for danger, look for moments where you can impact the scoresheet more than last season.
“Look he knows what to do and he’s definitely got the capability.”

Odegaard’s best season for goals in an Arsenal shirt was back in the 22/23 campaign where he netted 15 Premier League goals.
However, the last few seasons have been quiet by what he should be producing, with just 11 goals coming across the last two campaigns.
So far though, he has three in all competitions and is providing as well.
Put simply, if Odegaard can do what Neville says here, he’ll suddenly be in the player of the year conversation. Until then, though, he’ll always go under the radar a touch.
