Arsenal’s quest for a new defender makes perfect sense as Everton pursue £50m Gunners ace

Every Arsenal fan out there will know by now that the club wants to sign a new defender this summer.

Over the past few weeks, links have emerged almost daily as Mikel Arteta apparently seeks a player who can play both centre-back and right-back.

For some, this has been a tad puzzling at first glance. Arsenal have Jurrien Timber and Ben White already in the squad, while Cristian Mosquera is more than capable of playing both positions as well.

However, things may well be starting to make more sense.

Everton’s interest in Ben White explains Arsenal’s new defender desire

It has seemed a bit odd all summer that Arsenal have a capable defender in Ben White at the club but there is a determination to land a new face.

White proved last season, especially towards the back end, how valuable a squad player he is and his versatility is a big bonus.

Nevertheless, reports are now claiming that Everton are keen on signing the former Brighton man, who Arsenal paid £50m for.

Clearly, there must be a feeling among those internally at Arsenal that they are open to letting White leave, subject to a replacement being signed.

However, it does seem a little bit strange to be so adamant on getting a new defender in.

As mentioned, White can fill in just fine when needed, while the likes of Mosquera and Timber are capable, and even Declan Rice can play right-back if needed.

This feels like something that Mikel Arteta has got himself fixated on when in reality, it might be worth Arsenal saving the money required and upgrading the team elsewhere.

Still, if money ends up coming in for White, at least there is some logic there.
