Emile Smith Rowe’s Fulham future takes another twist as post-Arsenal disaster continues

Emile Smith Rowe’s move to Fulham was supposed to be a fresh start for the Hale End graduate.

The Cottagers were so confident in his ability they made him their record signing in 2024 for a deal worth £34million. He was brought in by Marco Silva to raise the level of Fulham’s attack, but it just hasn’t worked out.

Now 26, approaching what should be the peak years of his career, it seems as if he’ll never fulfil the huge potential we saw at the Emirates.

According to Flashscore, Smith Rowe’s future at Fulham is now becoming seriously uncertain. His Premier League minutes have been limited to brief substitute appearances, accumulating just 38 minutes under new manager Alvaro Arbeloa this season.

He started in the Carabao Cup midweek against West Ham but that has since only raised further concerns, with questions being asked about his form, his physical drive and his ability to produce the game-changing impact Fulham expected when they splashed out on him.

The Josh King factor hasn’t helped. The 19-year-old, who is being monitoring by Arsenal, has been outstanding so far this season. He is the first-choice number ten and is producing exactly the kind of decisive performances that Smith Rowe was supposed to, putting even more pressure on the former Arsenal man.

Arbeloa is said to not be interested in reputation or salaries and is willing to be ruthless about it. If Smith Rowe can’t become a more important player by the second half of the season, his future will have to be considered.

In hindsight Arsenal got a great deal at £34million. But seeing a former fan favourite — a player who helped kickstart this amazing project — struggle to find his level in what should be his prime years is really sad.

The talent was always there. It’s just a matter of application and confidence. Fulham, increasingly, may have had enough.
